This month will see Ryan Lee West aka Rival Consoles debut his new live set, restricting himself to a small selection of analogue equipment such as the Moog Voyager, Prophet and tape delay, as he supports Luke Abbott on his UK tour.

In celebration, Rival Consoles offers his fans a free download of the title track 'Odyssey' – a reflection of his quest to create atmosphere and space from minimal arrangements. His new EP also features label friend Peter Broderick and is available now on Erased Tapes.

Berlin-based Obstacle Records returns for its second release with another EP that draws on UK garage heritage while offering its own fresh take via a trio of newer names to watch out for.

The EP’s original track comes from Lesus - a hitherto unknown name that splices its stripped down Ghost-esque rhythmic backbone with an uneasy chiming melody. The A2’s remix from OBI - another name to keep track of - retains the pace & 2step stylings of the original while combining it with a Chicago house sensibility.

On the B side we find two alternate versions from the mysterious Prince of Ethiopia. The 808 version mutates the track into a old school hip hop instrumental, with the aforementioned 808 sounds to the fore, replete with vocal sampels, record scratches and ray guns. The MT40 version takes those elements, loses the snarling bassline, and pins it all to a broken beat rhythm, once again underlining Obstacle’s reverence for UK dance music culture & its desire to push it into surprising new territory.

Two years we've had to wait for the second in Skinnerbox's Edits series on Silicone Soul's Darkroom Dubs, but as the saying goes... All good things...

Having wow'd us with their bravery in taking on Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme' on #1 - a track that's still receiving airplay from Gilles Peterson - the German duo turn their attentions from Jazz to Rock, with a brand new brace of respectful reworks.

On the A we have Skinnerbox's edit of "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by English post-punk band Bauhaus. The song was the band's first single, released on 6 August 1979 by record label Small Wonder. Often considered the first gothic rock record, many see it as a seminal classic that went on to influence the later Goth scene.
The B-side plays host to Skinnerbox's edit of “Gouge Away” by American alternative rock band, Pixies. The original features on their classic album “Doolittle” from ’89, a massive indie success in the UK. The band hugely influenced the grunge scene.

Delicate and respectful edits from the duo, that see these two classic tracks expertly tailored for the dance floor.

After four years Swiss musician Kalabrese releases a brand new EP called 'Bananenräuber' and the eponymous track is musically as deep as the story behind it. Kalabrese manages to combine dubby elements with rasping synth patterns and a strong feel-good vibe that is partly interrupted and drifts into anger. 

Kalabrese's EP 'Bananenräuber' will be out May 12th, on Rumpelmusig.

Last summer during an evening spent with my friend Dj Topha, we came upon the everlasting subject of old versus new. “I’m finding so much great music right now, and not just digging back in time but exploring our own timeline geographically too,” he said, “The level of production these days is rising fast. You have to check out these snippets from a new label based in Casablanca.”

Not long after, in an interesting twist of fate, Driss Bennis and I began to exchange music: I shared his Soundcloud for the first Casa Voyager release, and he sent me a promo copy which I played out a lot. It seemed only logical to ask him for music for Basic Moves. Later that summer we met in Paris for a convivial back to back at Dawidu’s shop, Te Iubesc Records and Sapology. It was as simple as that, and in a few weeks Basic Moves 04 was ready.

Night Train and Overseas blew me away by their quality – the tracks are retro-esque yet fresh, and stem from a loose approach to electro. Their arrangements are very smart; not everything is revealed the first time round. The more you listen, the more you understand that the power of the tracks lies in the details. Together with Ailsa’s artwork, Stefan’s cut and Chris’ mixes the release fell so smoothly into place.

I have come to realise how important it is for the scene to release recently produced music as well as treasures from the past. You can’t build a community by only playing old records. It’s about a combination, about finding gems that glide together. Old and new. And for that, I think both these

DJ Booth tracks really fit the bill.

Wa Wu We is the artist alias and label from Sebastian Mullaert. This is the third chapter, crafted in the Swedish woods. The fi rst 6 episodes of the Wa Wu We label will form a collection of records, united by their significant and unique cover art and the way they’ve been recorded; this being the focus on improvising expression, resting in meditation and the nature surrounding Sebastian’s studio.
