In celebration of our guest's birthday and the 50th offering from our fledgling nest at the Abstract without Abstraction HQ in Denver, Colorado, we are incredibly honored to present a special offering from an irreplaceable presence in the city's scene, Routing Number. 

Routing Number is a gifted DJ and keen selector who we first encountered in the realms of Denver's house & disco parties, but who we quickly learned is unable to be pigeon-holed; effortlessly traversing the sounds of the spectrum and seen beaming with an infectious enthusiasm on the dance floor as often as they are found behind the decks. Here, they pay homage to their metalhead roots, exploring the intersections between ambient, noise, heavy metal, and dance music in a mix delivered in a style that epitomizes what this series was originally intended to be all about.

As moods reflect, morph, and mirror the weather (here the depths of winter), we hope that you stay warm, look out for one another, turn the volume up, and enjoy pouring over this chapter in our guest's sound. For us, we hope it is just one of the opening chapters, with many more to come. It's a rare honor to hear the fruits of a musician's obsession with one particular aspect of the spectrum; be it an artist, a city, a label, or-- in this case-- a lifestyle. 

In the US, with the midterm elections fomenting, the seasons changing, climate chaos continuing it's relatively undisturbed course, and catastrophes and joys of all manner hiding in the wings and in plain sight, we're humbled to offer our 53rd episode; a glimpse into the proclivities of producer Tommy Metz. 

Tommy Metz is a Colorado-based abstract electronic producer & veteran of the scene, with releases on local labels too storied to recount: Plastic Sound Supply, Bocumast, Laserpalace and-- more recently-- the new Denver imprint Multidim Records. Growing up in Fort Collins and moving to Denver in 2002, he has been heavily and consistently involved in the DIY/Indie music scenes of Colorado.

During this first week of Advent, we remember and honor minerality; all of foundational elements -- geometrically arranged -- so as to provide support for life and speak to us through the voices of seashells, crystals, and bones. From the crystals within our ears to the brittle dust forming the substrate of our first phonograph records, we are also grateful for Lauryn Lesley -- Stay In Crew collective member, Minneapolis <=> Denver traveller, and regular at Intellephunk's Great Beyond gathering. For the next 45 minutes, set aside the time and space needed to calm and to quell all manner of sorrow, by listening to her contribution and observing the march into the darkness that we will all walk over the next month.

On January 22nd, 2023 the world celebrated the Lunar New Year, and the gate was opened to welcome the astrological proclivities and inclinations of the Yin Water Rabbit. Now, on February 1st, patiently and excitedly awaiting for the arrival of the Rabbit, which is to occur on February 4th, we celebrate the new year and the arrival of a very special contribution to our fledgling series, provided by the inspirational selector, and friend of many years, Cay Horiuchi.

In Cay's words:

AW/OA 056: 癸卯 [mixed by cay horiuchi]

Today, in many parts of the world, new year celebrations come to a close, with lanterns being lit and allowed to float into the sky over beaches and city skylines. With those lanterns, all kinds of worries and suffering are being released to the wind, welcoming a new chapter and serving as a reminder of the migrations and transmigrations that have occurred every cycle for untold generations. 

In the spirit of the Spring that is to come, we are again humbled to be able to offer a mix from a relatively new acquaintance, the Denver-via-Daytona DJ and 1/2 of the frontrange hardcore duo Loudmen (along with @wngdu), Mitch Smith.

AW/OA 016: Mt. Auburn [mixed by Lychee]

Beginning again, with new ears, informed by everything they've heard, Abstract without Abstraction is honored to present a cinematic, lusciously mixed, contribution from Taylor Bratches, aka Talien. When Talien @talienmusic found dance music nearly a decade ago, she knew she was home. A dancer since the age of four and a former music journalist, her passion for movement and her obsession with music has propelled her to seek community on dance floors in cities all over the globe.  

For Talien, DJing is a personal, political and spiritual act—a way to express, to channel frequencies, to unite people, and to give to others the kinds of formative dance-floor experiences that were given to her. Propelled by this sentiment, she became an active participant of Walking and Falling, the Chicago-based mentorship program for female-identifying and non-binary DJs, and currently runs their podcast series at @walkingandfalling. In line with the Walking and Falling vision, she seeks to provide women and nonbinary DJs with an alternate route for exposure, visibility and community.  She is also affiliated with the LA-based female DJ collective Xenophile Collective.  Interested in working with a range of dance music genres, her goal is to create dynamic sonic landscapes that are both terrestrial and otherworldly.  She is also a writer, and currently is writing a book about her relationship to dance and dance music.

AW/OA 020: Talien

The ends-of-years, with their planetary rotations, hibernations, sheddings, rejuvenations, and regenerations mark a certain pause or contain a condensed (frustrated) energy of emergence. This time, we mark that moment with a welcomed contribution from Mansour Al-Amin-Dyer. 

In his words, Mansour is "on a path of rediscovery in order to construct his own brand of authenticity. The mix I have presented for AW/OA, as Manny 'Nuff, is another exercise in mining the more nuanced bits that connect yesteryear into the present and beyond."

Originally from Chicago, and recently re-located to Denver, you can catch him around the building his unique presence through the transnational collective, Peer Review, which is focused on enhancing the already promising underground dance community.

AW/OA 025: Remount [Mixed by Manny 'Nuff]

Alright, why not fit one more mix in before the end of the year? In anticipation of their first, self-titled album (due out on 1/1/2019), Abstract without Abstraction is honored to host @tech_noallah, the Denver-based gabber princess. A perfect sister-mix to DJ Dreamcast’s, this mix finds techno Allah (aka Aisha Jeylani) running the gamut from their eponymous genre through footwork, speed garage, and breakcore, with all manner of 160+ scorchers in between. It’s an ascendent, frenetic mix to crack the turning of the calendar wide open. For those whose 2018 is better left unremembered, let her offering cauterize it. 

For those in Denver, techno Allah plays NYE 2018 alongside @h-lite, the Nightshift DJs and a host of other AW/OA favorites at ÑÇRÇ.

AW/OA 027: tECHNO ALLAH's NYE 2018 Mix

A full moon, Easter (Ēostre) weekend, the beginning of Pesach, finally feeling the dehiscence of Spring; of everything that happened two weeks ago, perhaps one of the most serendipitous was being able to finally meet @sisgirlpgh, the recent San Francisco transplant and co-organizer of MESH, an all-inclusive queer dance party based in Pittsburgh, PA. 

This season, we’re ecstatic to turn the tables over to Sis for a journey deep into the flow of the most aqueous DnB; traversing time-scales as they skip– like a liquid prism bouncing on the surface of a lake– along with this most celebratory, liberating, and hypnotic kaleidoscope of genres. 

In Sis Girl’s words, Liquid Percussive is “a collection of atmospheric breaks mixed with other genres to reflect my feelings of spending the weekend in the woods with my queer family listening to some queer music”

"Welcome to Abstract without Abstraction. As always, I’m your host ilind. i, l, i, n, d. Which, seems to autocorrect to "Blind" in most messaging services. In this episode, we’re going to be playing with a lot of silly words that get autocorrected, as we are thrilled to present the first in a series of DIY label showcases, listening exclusively to the work put out on the Copenhagen-based computer music label, FLUF. f. l. u. f. FLUF is the truly do-it-yourself labor of love of Stephen McEvoy, also known as tuuun. (That’s a t with 3 u’s and an n).  Though, the tag “computer music” doesn’t really do the imprint justice, as Stephen recently reiterated to me that FLUF has zero interest in what they call the “elitist, wealthy, boring, staid, poe-faced kind of posturing that is associated with "computer music" or out-there electronic music.” So, perhaps we’re better to think of FLUF then as a zone of intersecting artists taking a stand on multiple fronts - pushing against the pallor-faced seriousness unto death, and against the exclusionary, gear-enfranchised attitudes implicit in so many scenes. However we choose to think about them, FLUF are a deadly serious label, with a seriously playful sense of humor.

They are, by all accounts, FLUffy. And it’s an attitude that, to my ear, hearkens to a spirit I love about these musics, from the braindance of Rephlex to the breakcore of Tigerbeat 6. From Violent Onsen Geisha to Narwhals. Have they listened to Planet Mu-founder Mike Paradinas’s Star Wars-themed records about Jawas, Banthas, and Sexy Tusken Raiders, I wonder? Whatever the case and context may be, they’re in good company with you listening.  Right now, we have FLUF artist NYZ underneath us, and we’re about to hear one from tuuun themselves. AW/OA 033: FLUF Records Showcase [mixed by i.lind]

As Abstract without Abstraction was coming into being, there were a handful of projects that served as direct inspiration for the series; projects that sought to voice the sonic perspectives of the rich, diverse worlds of exploratory dance music and experimental electronic sounds flowering in the otherwise oppressive and increasingly violent, fascist wasteland of twenty-first century Turtle Island. Of those, Acid Daddy's DIESELcast is exemplary. In that light, it is an honor and privilege to present a two-and-a-half hour excursion mixed by @dieselcast's head curator Acid Daddy (@mynameisjarvi) themselves.

jarvi (aka Acid Daddy) is a Detroit-born, Chicago-based DJ, organizer, label head (at the recently launched @identityspectrumrecords), and member of the Naughty Bad Fun Collective crew. Above, beyond, and because of those things, jarvi is also a vocal proponent of discourse on non-binary identity (see a recent feature at the Sequencer series, here: http://sequencer.club/sequencer-spotlight-jarvi/) and Taurean gardener, catalyzing and tending to spaces (sound-space, event-space, relationship-space) where queer energies of acceptance, being, and becoming can flourish. In their contribution to AW/OA, "Wandering Through the Swamp of Sadness", we are given glimpse into their vision of mix-as-worldmaking; mix-as-portal; mix-as-reconciliation and therapeutic return. For the next two-and-a-half hours, remember that when we listen, we are given the right to inhabit whatever times and spaces we desire, wandering outside of those prescribed by the ruling class, and that wandering is often how we find our way.

AW/OA 034: Wandering Through the Swamp of Sadness [mixed by Acid Daddy]

In this, the 37th installment of our increasingly itinerant, wayward series, we are dearly touched to found the new year by offering a mix composed by the Denver-based DJ (and co-organizer of the Peer Review series), Nico Tobon. 

Released provocatively on Presidents Day, as if to unfound, or unground the very basis of capitalocentric sovereignty; marking the caput (Latin) kaputt (German), Nico Tobon queries and teases apart languages usage in song as the mark of both meaning making and its undoing. In the rhythmic shards and vocal caresses left behind, or on the cutting room floor, new lines of desire are traced, or whispered in the expectant ear. In the DJs own words:

“Over the last couple years I have become fascinated by our use of language and I wanted to explore enunciation in particular within this mix. How words, however meaningless, take on new meaning when they are spoken. Some of the vocals used in these tracks, despite being unintelligible, can be quite evocative. To be able to derive meaning from hearing a foreign language or something algorithmically generated suggests a deeper connection to each other as humans as well as to the abstract representations of ourselves. More than anything, this mix is simply characteristic of my current musical interests -- rhythmically intriguing, textural, and always rooted in the psychedelic.”

AW/OA 037: Mixed by Nico Tobon

MIdway through a rare video interview with Steven Stapleton, the musician behind the legendary surrealist industrial outfit Nurse With Wound, conducted by the brainwashed.com crew and posted to 4iB records sometime in late 2012, Stapleton shows off a prized collection of CDs that he keeps stored in his studio, consisting entirely of work by female rappers. 

Here at Abstract without Abstraction we've become convinced over the past year that SAFiYAH, an OKC-born, Denver-based DJ and producer, is the logical inheritor and embodiment of the strange, alchemical crossings revealed by Stapleton in that moment. 

Through a string of brutal, passionate offerings that blend a breadth of post-acidic, Pan-African forms, what continually catches our ear In SAFiYAH's work is the way that she blends harddance and hiphop in a way that makes for the ecstatic, alien transitions that are the consistent highlights of her mixes.

It goes without saying then that we are honored to host her most recent transmission: a dive through the hypnotic gateway into a thoroughly mechanized vision of human energy, in which SAFiYAH offers our various quarantines and shelterings vibrant atomic light worthy of techno's midwestern US roots.

Honoring the heartening, cold, clear new moon in Aquarius and the changing seasons of our listening, we here at AW/OA could not be more touched to be able to present this beautiful, long-overdue 'holiday' mix from Denver's H Lite. 

Anton Krueger, the human within H Lite and one half of Singularity Boys is an incredible, buoyant creative life force and a prolific, playful (prolifically playful, playfully prolific) artist. His release on AW/OA, 'Green Youth Heattech' remains a high watermark of achievement among the humble offerings of our wayward imprint, and his new release on Denver's Multidim records exceeds GYHT in the depth of the sonic ideas it explores and the refinement of the technical wizardry it employs.
