In 1906, after the San Francisco earthquake, Kotoharu Inouye arrived in the Bay Area and learned how to grow chrysanthemums. He established himself and his family in Redwood City, CA, and became a prominent leader of the Japanese American community. The Japanese American growers made the chrysanthemum industry an international success, but not without having to resist discrimination, and overcoming the hardships of been imprisoned during World War II.
