Make It Bleed

"Vertigo" came from a place I didn't want to go but had to explore - that terrifying moment when you feel the dizziness building and there's nothing you can do to stop it. Unlike my other songs that came from heartbreak or anger, this one captures the immediate, visceral experience of your world literally spinning out of control.

I wrote this while feeling that familiar sensation creeping in - that dread when you know you're about to lose your balance completely. The lyrics document exactly what happens during those episodes - "Room starts spinning, walls closing in / Sweat pours down like acid rain / Eyes dart left, then right, then left again." That's not poetry - that's real-time documentation set to music.

The breakthrough was choosing 7/8 timing instead of standard 4/4. That odd time signature creates this constant sense of being off-balance, like you're always about to fall but never quite landing. Even metalheads trying to headbang feel slightly unstable, which perfectly mirrors the vertigo experience. You can't get comfortable with the rhythm, just like you can't get comfortable when the spinning starts.

Musically, this needed to be heavy and chaotic but also precise - these episodes aren't random, they follow their own brutal logic. The bridge breaks down completely: "FALLING! FALLING! Through the floor! CRAWLING! CRAWLING! Can't take more!" - that's the peak moment when everything fragments.

The guitar solo uses whammy bar effects to create those sickening pitch bends that sound like the world tilting. When AI helped me bring this to life, I specifically wanted those disorienting guitar techniques that make you feel seasick just listening.

"Vertigo" ends with everything dropping to silence except echoing vocals - "The spinning slows... The chaos fades... But echoes remain..." Because even when an attack ends, you know it could come back. That final "VERTIGO!" echo represents how these experiences stay with you.

This might be my most visceral song yet - taking something that tries to destroy you and turning it into something powerful instead. Sometimes the best way to fight not just vertigo, but anything, is to document it, own it, and make it into art.
