The Whisper of the Modem: FTSC-0001

The rain slicked the neon-streaked streets of New York City, reflecting the chaotic glow of Times Square. Sergeant Rex "Thunder" Thunderson, a genetically engineered rhino-elephant hybrid with the build of a linebacker and the tusks of a woolly mammoth, adjusted the grip on his Qu238 plasma laser rifle. His skin, a mottled grey-brown, was scarred from countless battles, but none like this. 

He was a product of the controversial "Project Chimera" – a super-soldier program gone rogue, and now, he was fighting for his life against the very organization that created him: the CIA.

A red-clad operative, his face obscured by night vision goggles, darted from behind a yellow cab, firing a burst from his suppressed submachine gun. Rex roared, the sound a guttural mix of an elephant's trumpet and a rhino's snort, and returned fire. The plasma bolt ripped through the air, melting a hole clean through the taxi and vaporizing the operative in a flash of blue light.

New York was a warzone.

 Rex had been cornered in the city, betrayed by a faction within the CIA who deemed Project Chimera too dangerous to exist. They wanted to erase all evidence, and Rex was their prime target. He lumbered forward, his massive frame surprisingly agile as he navigated the debris-strewn streets. The Qu238, designed for heavy combat, from an lab in northern California, hummed with contained energy, its twin barrels glowing ominously.
 
Another group of operatives, their red tactical gear a stark contrast against the dark asphalt, swarmed from an alleyway. Rex braced himself, his thick hide deflecting the incoming rounds like pebbles. He unleashed a sustained barrage from his rifle, the plasma streams carving fiery paths through the night. The air filled with the smell of ozone and burnt metal.

He paused, reloading the Qu238 with a fresh power cell, the mechanism a satisfying thunk and click. He could hear the distant wail of sirens, probably from the NYPD, but they wouldn't stand a chance against these "red men."

 These were the CIA's black delta force ops, trained killers with advanced weaponry.
 
Suddenly, a massive net fired from a nearby skyscraper snagged Rex, the electro-magnetic filaments sparking as they tried to contain his immense strength. He struggled, his muscles bulging, the tusks on his face scraping against the pavement as he was pulled to one knee. From the rooftops, snipers in red ghillie suits began to unleash a concentrated fire, aiming for the few vulnerable spots on his armored body.

Rex roared in defiance, the net struggling to hold him. He knew this was it, the final stand. But he wouldn't go down without a fight. With a surge of adrenaline, he tore at the net, the Qu238 still gripped firmly in his free hand. 

He would make them pay for their betrayal, for every chimera they had created and then discarded. The city that never sleeps was about to witness a nightmare.
