AYA MAI’s new single and video, "Time" is a young girl’s reflection on how fast the hours are swallowed by all the things her head tells her to run for: “When you try to make all the loose ends meet - your thoughts tower over you and overwhelm you. We live in such a ‘project me’-era, where life is often about achieving the obvious milestones instead of leaning back and allowing yourself to be in the process. In times of feeling so caught up in what feels like a mental chaos, we all need a release/escape in some way. So ‘You’ enter the story. A ‘You’ that I look to, to remind myself to let go of the inner voices and pay attention to the things that are truly important.” 

With this, she continues her emergent journey to present her own Scandinavian interpretation of a soundscape inspired by American pop culture.

AYA MAI is the friend with whom you explore your feelings about the nuances of being young and figuring out life. Knowing she doesn’t have all the answers, she’s constantly seeking an honest inner dialogue with herself and those who are listening - finding herself in a postmodern era, where nothing is defined and life is a ‘project me’.   She uses her music to translate and make sense of all the moving pieces in her head - a crafted soundscape of vivid colors and semi-translucent fabrics woven between contrasts of light and dark, simple and complex, existential reflections and small talk. It’s an openness and vulnerability; a community where we all feel safe and art is our escape. In the end, we’ll all meet on the dance floor, sing along and work it out together. 

Danish-born AYA MAI has been around music her whole life. Professionally trained from the age of 8, her craft is groomed and developed in the most traditional of formats. At the age of 12, she was hired by X-Factor DK to sing the opening tune at the finals in front of 40.000 people at Telia Parken Stadium, broadcasted live on television across Denmark. At the age of 16, she was offered a label deal, but felt she wasn’t ready to expose herself in a way that didn’t comply with her integrity. During her high school years, she made her mark in the jazz community in Denmark. She performed over 250 concerts with jazz icon, Niels Lan Doky, touring Scandinavia and Asia, performing with various artists like Brian McKnight, Dave Weckl, Debbie Sledge, Jeff “Tain” Watts and more. Through this breadth of live experience, her vocal chops were trained immensely and she excelled in interpreting the songs of the artists that she had always admired. But after years of being an interpreter, AYA slowly started to feel a hunger for writing her own original material as an artist. On longer stays in New York and Los Angeles in 2018, she met a wide range of American songwriters and producers. Being constantly surrounded by new creative minds, she threw herself into writing and began collaborating in the studio with an international cast of writers and producers. This project is the natural progression of that journey. Alongside writing/performance partners Kris Mai (Instrumentation - left) and Jona Mai (Drums, Percussion & Programming - right), AYA has a clear musical vision: Her songs present her Scandinavian interpretation of a soundscape inspired by American pop culture.

AYA’s first two singles in 2021, “Monday” in May and “Time” in June, have both received significant support from fans and media, being added to Spotify’s New Music Friday, Ny Pop, De Nye, and GRL PWR playlists, Tidal’s Puls playlist, and in her home country of Denmark, DR P4 Radio has interviewed her for their morning show and played both songs over 100 times, with additional radio support from Radio Sydhavsøerne, Radio LOUD, 902fm & Brønderslev Radio. Both singles have also gained coverage in outlets like Bands of Tomorrow, JaJaJa Music, Good Because Danish, Vi Unge, Girls are Awesome and more. She’s ready to move into fall, with her next single, “You’re Still Good” - arriving on October 29th, 2021
