The “Shacks & Shanties” project is a  South Side Chicago installation initiative organized by Faheem Majeed. Shacks were constructed as platforms for artistic performances and installations. I attended one such installation/performance, titled "Ghana Must Go" after the infamous plaid patterned tote bags that are so prevalent in West Africa. I talked to Faheem 
Majeed as well as Abbéy Odunlami, the artist behind "Ghana Must Go". We talked about community engagement, fashion, and appropriation.

Shacks And Shanties: a temporary art project (2013)

The first single from his upcoming first full-length recording "booker t. soltreyne: a race rekkid," the song "cochise" revisits the friendship between the movie’s two main characters Leroy “Preach” Jackson and Robert “Cochise” Morris.  Reminiscent of the classic Motown sound, "cochise" is armed with a thumping bass-line, chilling tambourine and a Pips-styled hook that implicates society as a whole for the senseless murder that climaxes the movie.  Combined with avery’s soulful vocal performance, "cochise" will re-introduce its listeners to authentic soul singing and the biting poetry of the Black Arts Movement.  One may believe that both "cochise" the song and avery’s voice are relics found in a time capsule from the 1970’s, but soon both his voice and the song aides its story in being a poignant commentary on the current violence rippling through many urban communities.
