An intimate set of lullabies for all ages by Improviser / Composers Ayelet Rose Gottlieb (voice) and Anat Fort (piano). Sung mostly in Hebrew, Ayelet and Anat draw inspiration from classic Hebrew children's poetry, such as Fania Bergstein's "Restful Night" and H. N. Bialik's "The Flower to the Butterfly". A lush album of night-music, there are several moments of piano solo, and one piece arranged for voice with effects. Though not at all a political album, "Two More Dreams" carries a message of peace: Ayelet composed Samih Al Qasim's poem "Star", translated to Hebrew from Arabic by Sasson Somekh. The Arabic and Ladino languages are also heard in the album, in the song "Ya Eyni" in which Gottlieb uses phrases she recalls hearing as a child from her Maternal grandparents. Gottlieb and Fort want to bring these languages as well as the Palestinian poetry into the Jewish-Israeli environment in a natural way, enhancing the cross-cultural fertilization that they hope will develop and grow. 

In November the two will celebrate the release of "Two More Dreams" with a tour of Israel. Following that, Ayelet and Anat hope to bring this music to audiences around the world.

Inside An Hourglass

An eight-year-old boy jumps into the family Volvo to spend a day with his dad. The car is loaded with instruments, saxophones and flutes, that his father plays professionally. Their destination, a converted church on 57th Street in Manhattan that has recently become a recording studio.  
For the next few hours, his father Arnie Lawrence plays improvised music with three friends and bandmates. Dickie, the five-year-old son of legendary bassist Richard Davis is there too. And while the quartet begins making music, Dickie and Ricky (Erik) run around the studio, picking up instruments, whistles and horns and contribute to the ambiance being created by their elders. 
The music begins with Lawrence’s flute in an impromptu duet with the inventive piano of Dick Hyman. the voices of the children wander in and out. Davis’ countenance on bass joins the conversation. So does the tabla and percussion of Ed Shaugnessey. The music is entirely improvised and unfolds as a suite entitled “Inside An Hourglass”.  Recorded in one day, and released on Herbie Mann’s Embryo label, the music has so many chapters, twists and turns. The year is 1969, the Summer of Love.

Nearly fifty years later Erik Lawrence is a saxophonist, flutist, following his own path but strongly influenced by the icon his father became during his life. He flew to Vancouver, Canada at the urging of his dear friend Ayelet Rose Gottlieb, an exploratory vocalist, composer, improviser and arranger, who was a protégé of Arnie’s in her youth in Jerusalem. Her idea, to recreate the setting with her own children, twins Ma’or and Yasmin and baby Maia, providing the role of children of young ages. She was inspired to further explore the process started by Arnie, to break down the wall between being “musician” and “parent”. To remove the either/or limitations and to incorporate the sounds of life in the art of music making.

A perfect partner for this project proved to be their close mutual friend, pianist Anat Fort, who has a long history with both Ayelet and Erik and was in Vancouver to play at the International Jazz Festival. A studio was contracted with little plan but to make sure there were enough microphones open. The three adults in the room shed their egos, embraced their mutual admiration and freed their minds for the unknown. A few poems were extracted, including one written by Arnie for his Children of All Ages project in the 1970s, with the refrain, “Children of all ages just might turn out to be sages.” 

Like the original recording fifty years prior, all the music was improvised, no ideas were discussed. Spontaneous music, played by children, children of children, children with children and intended for children of All Ages. 

The album will be released in early 2019 on Ride Symbol Records (NYC) and will be premiered live at the Jerusalem Jazz Festival in Dec 2018.

PNEUMA (πνεῦμα) is an ancient Greek word for “breath”, “spirit” or “soul”. This new quartet features four improvisers / composers: vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb and clarinetists James Falzone, Francois Houle and Michael Winograd. Pneuma’s sound is kaleidoscopic – many worlds entangled – with extended techniques and layered effects blending with soulfulness and an exposed vulnerability. Jewish-music intertwines with contemporary classical compositions and free-jazz improvisations. Pneuma’s instrumentation is unusual and full of breath, allowing every band member to reimagine their role and find their ground in new and innovative ways. The quartet zooms in-and-out, shifting perspectives from the very personal to the global, from intimacy to a loud roar. The poetry (sung in English) comes from many corners of the world including Christina Rossetti (UK), Forugh Farrokhzad (Iran), James Joyce (Ireland), Mayumi Terada (Japan), and Ono no Komachi (9th century Japan). These texts coincide with wordless pieces such as Gottlieb’s “Neither You Nor I”, inspired by a solo by the late bassist Ora Boasson-Horev. Pneuma made their premiere at the 2017 Vancouver International Jazz Festival and their debut album, “Who Has Seen The Wind?” is anticipated for release in Spring 2019 on Songlines Recordings.

7 - Passing By  The Shape Of Tears

Described as an “intoxicating vocalist” (Vancouver Sun) with an “individually rigorous tone” (Ben Ratliff, New York Times), composer and vocalist Ayelet Rose Gottlieb is an international performer, an explorer of sound and a seeker of musical adventures. Her unique blend of jazz, middle-eastern & Jewish music, combined with her innovative approach to composition and improvisation has led her to fascinating collaborations. Ayelet has performed John Zorn’s music at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Improvised with vocal master Bobby McFerrin at Carnegie Hall;  She performed her compositions to erotic Biblical texts at a cave in the Israeli desert, and sung with Mycale (a-cappella quartet) at a butchery in Austria and in a golden church in Ecuador. Ayelet’s multilingual and multicultural approach is a constant thread through all of her work. Her new recording, “13 Lunar Meditations: Summoning the Witches” is her eleventh album as a bandleader or co-leader. Previous recordings include a collaboration with Anat Fort in an album of lullabies for all ages; with Pneuma quartet, Ayelet collaborates with three virtuoso clarinetists, drawing musical inspiration from poetry about the wind; in “Roadsides” she connected her eastern and western roots, combining the sound of the Oud with that of the euro-classical guitar and jazz piano.

A mother of three, Jerusalem-born and Montreal-based, Ayelet is the founder of  the “Orchard of Pomegranates” - a platform for workshops and self-produced concerts. Through her music, teaching, and facilitating, Ayelet cultivates community and connection. This year’s “Orchard of Pomegranates: Vocal Intensive II” included workshops by nine guest faculty over three days. Teachers included acclaimed vocalists Theo Bleckmann, Fay Victor, Sofìa Rei and Christine Duncan.
