2014’s been something of a break out year for Wen. After releasing his debut album, Signals, back in March on Keysound, Owen Darby’s seen his profile rise dramatically; and in releasing a collaboration with Parris on Tempa and inaugurating the Wisdom Teeth label with his track ‘Late Night,’ the lad’s proved that his brand of muscular, grime indebted club music has got a set of curvaceous, well defined legs. Ahead of appearing in Room Two for Butterz on 21st November (alongside sets on the 26th December and the 16th January) he’s kindly put together a mixtape that outlines his dancefloor focused selections way better than we ever could, even if we wrote a hundred of these curt introductions.

DUPLOC launches new prestigious VA vinyl series "140 ALLSTARS"

"When naming a project after one of the most iconic series that existed in dubstep, you know the pressure to deliver is on. But that's exactly what I needed. I have worked on quite a few compilation releases over the past years, and I'm happy with the results, but I wanted to raise the bar. The pioneering Tempa Records and its Dubstep Allstars unfortunately came to an end, but there is a place and time for everything. With respect to and in memory of Tempa's legacy, it felt appropriate to title the new project 140 ALLSTARS, especially since it is the new producers who are now responsible for keeping things fresh and interesting. And it is exactly that energy I'm trying to capture. In slight contrast to our other releases, this is a series specifically built for the sound system and I couldn't be happier with all the heavyweight cuts on Vol. 1, but most important it is sounding remarkably cohesive given it is a VA project. We are pressing the entire project on 12" vinyl and there will be at least four volumes coming through over the next year and a half. Life Form (Deep Dubstep)

RICH NINES
LOONY TUNES 1979-2020

Studio mix of dance music spanning four decades all featuring loon call samples. This set accelerates gradually between 120-170bpm over 2 hours from melodic house and breakbeat techno into dubstep and jungle, with loon samples and ambience throughout. 

Recorded June 2020 via laptop with Traktor DJ software and Pioneer DDJ-SB2 controller, at Lake Muskoka, Ontario, traditional territory of the Waha Mohawk nation. With respect for the loon as powerful symbol across Native American cultures predating Canadian colonization and bird branding. 

I grew up having this naturalistic and nationalistic association with the sound as a child in the 80s, from the Canadian "loonie" dollar coin and Solitudes music kiosks selling ambient wildlife albums featuring birdsong for meditation and retail. 

Then as a raver from the ‘90s on, I learned to hear the loon call sample in electronic music evoking the Balearic bliss of original 80’s rave and meta-nostalgia for good party vibes. All with a cheeky dawn chorus rainforest romantic flavour perfect for outdoor morning sets from the Mediterranean to Cascadia. 

In 2020 the loon sample remains an enduring in-joke within dance music culture, embraced sincerely and ironically for sonic effect and reference across genres. Fluorescent (Deep Dubstep)

Wir gehen mal in die Zukunft. Swuuuusch. “2 Jahre später” steht auf einer großen Kinoleihnwand danach ist Marcus Maak aka Vinylizer in klassischer Drei-Punkt-Ausleuchte zu sehen. Er erzählt von seiner persönlichen Reise durch die Bassmusikwelt. 
Marcus säbelte los: “Es fing vor 30 Jahren an. Ich gründete 1992 die Radiosendung Black is Black.” Die Sendung beschäftigte sich vor allem mit HipHop, dabei machte er seine ersten Erfahrungen als Radiomoderator. Schnell wurde Herr Maak etwas bewusst und ergänzte seinen Satz sofort. “Ich merkte aber, dass mir ein Genre nicht reicht. Es ist mir zu eindimensional.” Daraufhin gründete er BTTB - Back To The Basics, ebenfalls im Jahre 1992. Inhaltlich soll sich die Sendung mit mehreren Genres beschäftigen: HipHop, House und Acid Jazz, aber schon schnell kamen UK-Ravetunes und Jungle hinzu. Der Grundtenor von BTTB bestand aber immer aus einer entscheidenden Komponente: BASS.

Nur mal ein kleiner Gedankengang, was Vinylizer im Jahre 2022 von sich geben könnte. Es folgen zahlreiche weitere Projekte, die sich mit Bassmusik beschäftigen, wie die Crew WobWob!, eine regelmäßige Sendung auf ByteFM (BTTB), jährliches Auftreten auf dem Fusion und Feel Festival und die Internetseite recordstore.love.
Wir freuen uns endlich ein Mix von Vinylizer in unseren digitalen Händen zu halten und ihn euch präsentieren zu können. Er ist ein Urvater für die Bassmusik-Community und wie keiner immer noch so leidenschaftlich bei der Sache.
