A Midwinter Night's Dream

The visions of early cyberpunk literature seem like relics of another time, back when the internet held the promise of so much more. Faced with capitalist realism, one can envision little for the future of the internet compared to what William Gibson's Neuromancer foresaw in the 80s. The web is now inundated with social media and commercial webpages to the extent that its subversive value and the concept of a separate landscape have been lost. It appears that the cyber counterculture of 90s hackers has been rendered impotent against an adversary that has co-opted and assimilated their own tactics, evident in the rise of white-hat ethical hacking and penetration testing. Imagination surrounding cyberspace has also waned, overshadowed by the monotonous blue and white bulletin-style interfaces of Facebook.

Yet, the decentralized nature of 90s cyberspace seemed to offer an escape—an uncontrollable potential for radical change, a historical milestone poised to revolutionize everything in manifold, unpredictable ways. This potential arose from the nature of decentralized networks and the anonymous flow of information. What perhaps turned what appeared to be inevitable into the seemingly impossible was what William Gibson described as "cyberspace becoming a standard background technology like the sewage system." Indeed, cyberspace is no longer a separate realm from "real life" but an extension of it that often goes unnoticed. It no longer provides an escape; instead, it mirrors "real life." The landslides in cyberspace are not intended to evoke nostalgia for the lost aesthetic forms of the early 80s digital revolution, as is the current trend, reducing it to "iconic" imagery, exorcising and neutralizing its real promises. Potentials exert influence without being actualized. It is this potential that the album strives to evoke—the Neuromancer vision of cyberspace as an escape from the ubiquity of neoliberalism, a departure from the confines of the material world into a realm of unrestrained possibility, a specter of a world that could be free.
