MYYUH - CLUB DUNYA MIX

This month, we welcome the incredible @dalilakali to AZEEMA FM - Dalila is a London based DJ and Actress with Jamaican, Indian and Syrian roots. On the approach to Notting Hill Carnival she brings us a really special Mix referencing her roots and memories. 

"As Carnival is a celebration of Caribbean culture, I wanted to pay homage to Reggae, its subgenre Dub and sound system culture. They are integral to the progression of many different genres and subgenres we collectively appreciate today. From Punk, Hip-Hop, Garage, Grime and even House.

Dub, which was founded in the late 1960s and early 1970s, is instrumental remixes of reggae songs that are manipulated using reverb and echoing. It is argued that dub creators used echo and reverb to elicit memories of African culture in their listeners in postcolonial Jamaica.

Sound systems are a pivotal aspect of carnival here in the UK. Always on a side road, I often seek them out. I love the feeling of the bassline echoing in my chest as the sun beats down on my head. The pace is slower and the energy is powerful. The music is transcendent - spiritual - and I feel connected. To myself. To the music. To my ancestors.
I have selected songs that are reminiscent of my childhood and my culture. Choosing these songs reminded me of loud speaker boxes, bodies caught in the momentum of the vibe and jerk sizzling on the drum.

Let’s big up Jamaica and the offerings she endlessly supplies to the world."

Introducing a very special mix by Sudanese DJ @Tabideee

"The mix starts off with sounds of Sudan, and an ode to the electronic elements in traditional Sudanese music. These were the soundtrack of my childhood; dancing into the early hours with my family and friends and have informed alot of my selection-the depressive techno beats I blend and produce today. 

The second half of the mix is a representation of me trying to understanding that my homeland is being ripped apart by war, and the process of grief . We get most news of friends and family passing through Whatsapp and voice notes and it's a really painful but detached process. I wanted to capture and archive it.

But it ends on the moments of hope- group Facetime calls, visits to displaced family members who have been successfully building a new life, spending time with my cousins who are the splitting image of my grandparents, and finding home in each other-here."
