I came up with my EP title after remembering a conversation I had with a therapist, who described certain feelings, desires or traits of mine having 'grown very small'. Each song represents an emotion that can be uncomfortable but necessary to share - grief, anger, submission, dominance, isolation. Starting as something small and uncertain, through making these songs I've learned to accept these parts of myself. I often think of intentions, or tiny first steps being like seeds, that I enjoy watching grow over time. I visualised each of these parts growing until they were ripe for the picking - to be enjoyed by others and in turn, liberating myself of them.

Fruiting Parts

I made these tracks over the space of around 2 years, in which I was either busy finding my place in a new country, or finding motivation while in my own. The EP title references a line in the lead track ‘Flexible’, where the full line is “followed artificial light rather than live blind”. It refers to the many phases we go through as young people in our constant search for truth, as moving in the wrong direction feels better than going nowhere. I felt this sums up the EP as that's what it is, 4 songs representing 4 different directions I found myself in, looking for truth in all the confusion.

Arctic Monkeys - Arabella Cover

This is my first attempt at making a folk / folktronica song, and a little piece of my heart. It's an honest reflection on leaving a difficult relationship, and the confusing conflicting emotions that can arise in that time. Laced in hope, this song is a symbol of choosing yourself even when the pull back to love can be so tempting, and is very special to me. I hope you will like it!

Cover of Arctic Monkeys - Arabella:
Of all of my eclectic influences, rock has sparsely been one of them so this might seem like a bit of an unusual choice of song for me to cover. This song was part of an iconic era in many of our teenagehoods, getting our first taste of strongbow-dark-fruits-flavoured-freedom at Reading festival. I wanted to cover it after listening to the lyrics and realising how tender and romantic they are, in comparison to the aggressive instrumentation. My original plan was to make the instrumental match the lyrics in terms of tone and sweetness, and I think I vaguely managed that… for about 30 seconds. 

After embracing the direction the cover was taking itself, I had a lot of fun playing around with more aggressive vocal processing, as well as choral sections of layered harmonies - until I ended up with almost 40 vocal tracks in the final mix (one of which is my cat - see if you can find it ;) ). Anyways I feel like I pushed myself with this track, playing with some faster rhythms and different effects and I almost lost my mind trying to sort through everything I’d thrown at it, but I’m pretty happy with the result and I hope you guys like it too!
