"Soulcaster" is the third solo record by Brooklyn-based composer/performer Joanna Mattrey. Following Live in Accord and various Notice Recordings-curated performances in the Hudson Valley, this album is a further development in our years-long friendship. With "Soulcaster", Mattrey scrapes, scratches, and wails on viola, prepared viola, and a tromba marina, built by Webb Crawford. Mattrey’s love of unique and unusual sounds has inspired her to alter the pure tone of the viola through preparations with styrofoam, plastic toys, chains, and other objects. But the newest sounds in her arsenal come from the tromba marina, which has one primary playing string and thirteen sympathetic strings. Rather than gently coaxing out the harmonics, as the historical playing style suggests, Mattrey employs a raucous and roaring approach.

The title, "Soulcaster", is borrowed from Brandon Sanderson’s book series, "The Stormlight Archive". In the fantasy series, a soulcaster is an instrument that transforms one object or life form into another. Mattrey’s practice connects heavily to the idea of transformation. She uses preparations and objects not only to create new sounds from her instruments, but to embrace the unknown. No matter how many times the same object has been used, depending on the vibrations on a given day, the preparations might bring out totally different sounds. This randomness creates a joyful challenge for Mattrey, who believes that especially during improvisation, music has its own life that activates and guides the sound forward. Mattrey surrenders to this energetic line of sound over the eleven tracks featured on this tape.

Jon Neher is a musician and artist from Saskatchewan in Canada. He is also renowned for performing as part of Peace Flag Ensemble and indie band Beach Body, as well as work for his own label Fenwood Rail. Jon followed a Classical music education through piano lessons at an early age, progressing into playing Jazz as he got older before he began to explore his own compositions after he had discovered Hardcore music.
Michael Scott Dawson is an artist based in Vancouver, Canada, who was also originally from Saskatchewan. His music has been released on labels including We Are Busy Bodies, Sonder House, and also Jon’s Fenwood Rail imprint. Michael is part of the Peace Flag Ensemble, providing guitar, field recordings and subtle electronics to the sound. His Ambient albums ‘Music For Listening’ and ‘Find Yourself Lost’ have received critical acclaim, not least from Whitelabrecs and this was the starting point for the release of this album, after we got in touch with Michael to show our appreciation; announcing Music For Listening as our favourite record of 2022.
‘I Yield My Time’ is the third collaboration solely between Jon and Michael, who know each other through the music community in Saskatchewan. Their Ambient-leaning debut ‘On Remembering’ was released digitally through Fenwood Rail back in 2019. Their love of music and diverse range of influences inform their work and enable them to experiment with a wide range of ideas and genres. As can be gleaned from earlier in this text, they both perform as part of the Peace Flag Ensemble, a group whose album Astral Plains is due out in July 2023.

This album places Jon’s piano sketches at the fore, with his approach to music composition beginning with improvised sessions on his keyboard before being adapted through chance-based post production techniques. Michael took these piano sounds and processed them through an array of tape machines and pedals. Most of the additional resonances beyond the original piano recordings are actually just new versions of these. Minimal details subtly adorn the pieces, with Michael’s field recordings and modest additional instrumentation inserting frail little soft sounds into the weight and voice of the piano. There is something beautiful in this juxtaposition, as Michael found himself building little movements around the improvisations, like a tiny orchestra of broken sounds.
The album is more about the process and combination of the artists’ respective techniques, than being centred around a specific concept. However, Jon notes that he realised after completing the album that he was thinking a lot about death, with close family members being diagnosed with cancer, the failing health of his grandparents, music industry peers passing at an early age and a choir director who had lent him a Rhodes passed away. There was this weird reckoning with the idea that death can be so much and so little depending on your context, and there are drastic implications on how you might find meaning in your life as a result.
For the listener, time becomes a theme in which to concentrate ones thoughts; whether consciously or subconsciously, as the subduing echoes of delay pedals and fading keys disappear. This record will become a reflective companion, which may direct thoughts and feelings in several directions; whether this be to reflect upon the past, to be present in the moment, or wander into the future, full of hope.

For more than twenty years, Roel Funcken has been a cornerstone in electronic experimentation. Alongside his brother Don, this Dutch sound sculptor melted hip-hop, industrial and soundscapes under monikers like Funckarma and Shadow Huntaz. A prolific solo musician and collaborator as well, Funcken teams up with Cor Bolten to revive the Legiac project with the eight tracks of Banisteriopsis Caapi. Keys appear through a sorrowful haze in "Mimosa Hostilis", this machined mist difussing as distorted strings penetrate before a dawning of icy brightness. Modulated forms and shapes billow in the bubble and trill of "Pyschotria Viridis" before the orbiting interference and introspection of "Epicatechine." Percussion is reduced to a texture, the duo finding structure in droplets of water, the stretch of steel and a litany of field recordings. The partnership dive deep into their chosen sounds, elongating and expanding tones to find harmony in the absence and isol ation that is their focus. Pieces like "Solanaceae" bristle with an understated elegance, like starlight piercing a brooding night sky, while "Banisteriopsis Caapi" finds an eerie solace in its repurposing of voice as an undulating elegy. Legiac achieve a distant intimacy with their listener, a relationship forged through complex compositions, gentle movements and subtle shifts.

On Therapy, his gripping third collection for Imprec, Alexandre Bazin creates concise melodic electro-acoustic environments with ripping timbres, deep staccato sequences and a dramatic immediacy. Elements of classical, minimal techno, modular-ambient and drone music permeate this aptly titled album, Therapy, from Alexandre Bazin.

Bazin himself describes this album as "new experimental electronic music." Melodic progression, pulse and timbre play key roles in his delicately crafted work. Saturation and feedback permeate the sonic atmosphere allowing new fragments to emerge creating new melodies and tonal colors.

Bazin's sound suggests the presence of electric guitars, orchestras and acoustic instruments which are also present on this album. All but the first two tracks of therapy include acoustic instruments carefully placed in the mix.
