To express the duality in his life, Alan Wood joins us again for a second residency show - the time entitled KIMCHI. This new show explores sounds that find their roots in the UK, and juxtaposes against the calm/introspective side of Alan shown in his show Šum Lišti. With its roots in traditional Chinese culture, Chi (also spelled qi) refers to the vital life force or energy that runs through all living beings. It is the essence of existence that flows through each of us, uniting the body, mind and spirit. It is what makes us alive.

KIMCHI 4 - Alan Wood

Today we have Christopher Lombardo as our guest. He is a composer, sound designer, and art director from Ft Lauderdale, Florida.

Which artists has influenced you the most?

- A lot to unpack in this question. 3 artists come to mind. When I was 11 years old, I was awakened to music and its power by Slipknot, which eventually lead to a love of extreme metal (death, black, doom, etc - metal was my first true love and that still shows). It was a chance encounter with a dude a full grade older than me. He walks up to me in Spanish class and says "here you need this" ... and hands me the Iowa record. They say life boils down to a few moments. This was one of them.
When I was 15, NIN inspired me to take production more seriously and that music didn't need to revolve around guitars and be angry all the time. Emotion was okay, and the spectrum of emotion did more for the music than just adolescent rage.
Around the age of 19, my group of college friends began experimenting with psychedelics, and coincidentally was around the time I stumbled into the Warp records. I think these two factors took me away from song and rock music completely. Prior to that I was still very much cemented in a "song" mentality. Squarepusher rocked me to my core and had me reevaluating all of my musical experiences and understandings I held at that point. I remember it feeling like a dam of inspiration had just burst - I didn't have to make traditional dance music, but I didn't have to be in a traditional band either.

What new projects/releases with your participation are expected in the near future?

- A small remix EP of my last release "Cephalgian" will be wrapped up once the final tracks are complete. I'm very much looking forward to Mitoma and Daed's interpretations, but will also feature some new tracks. I am working on a follow up EP but that has no concrete details to announce.

Which artists/labels is more relevant to you now?

- These days I find myself listening mostly to stuff outside of electronic music. I'm heavily into soul, folk, funk during my work day, actually. I find myself just enjoying the music vs analyzing (which is what happens when I listen to electronica (or metal)). While I was in the last round of production for Cephalgian, I was exclusively listening to acoustic guitar based music because it was so far away from what I was doing. The simplicity of just 3 chords and a voice is just fascinating to me - it's something I could never do.
There is so much music being created these days, and it is available to us so readily, it is harder and harder for me to sit down and connect with it.
Some recent discoveries or heavily repeated listens are:
AI Lover, Justin Townes Earle, Tonto's Expanding Head Band, Dave Van Ronk, Zamilska, Portal, TENGGER, Objekt, Skee Mask, Ital Tek, Street Sects, Spectral Voice, Bongripper, Junior Kimbrough, Dr John and Dragged Into Sunlight.

What inspires you now to create music?

- In my younger days I think I would've tried to say something profound here.
As an old man with more perspective? I've had an instrument in hand since I was 8 years old and  I don't think I'd be the same person without the music. It's an escape, I think about it all day, every day, and am in love with all it brings to my life. The tinkering, the artistic demands of crafting a track, the nerdiness, the unending search for something that's just out of reach, that deep understanding with other musicians, the hours and hours of debate with my friends, the gear collection.... the obsession.  I could go on and on - simple fact is, I fucking love music. I want to be part of it and live it and breathe it... that's more profound than inspiration to me.

What set-up do you use when creating music?

- My setup is forever in flux...especially my live performance gear. Since 2008 I've been producing almost exclusively on the computer but recent years have seen some eurorack addiction.
