Premiere: Kris Davis -  Petroleum [Connaisseur Recordings]

The idea was to carry out a Serialist composition that involved using real time data that was captured from a Formula One car.

Various data sets from Jenson Button's winning Melbourne Grand Prix of 2010 which included throttle position, brake position, G-Force lateral/longitudinal, steering angle, speed and RPM were used for the composition. Max MSP was the tool of choice to read the data in real time and convert each data set into notes of the chromatic scale. 

The notes were then converted into a score and played as an orchestral piece. You can hear the violins and cellos rising in pitch and velocity as the speed of the car and engine RPM increases and you can hear the timpani drums as he starts braking into corners whilst the G Force longitudinal increases and decreases the velocity the timpani drums are struck with. Through hard cornering you can hear G-Force lateral triggering low dissonant violins and cellos which give the effect of tension. Various instruments were layered throughout the piece to give a more dynamic and interesting result.
