Queen of the Nile

Henry Mancini wrote this classic cop show theme song in 1959. A bunch of artists have covered it over the years, including The Blues Brothers, Art of Noise, Duane Eddy, and ELP. 

I set my take on the jazzy noir instrumental to a simple 909 house beat and added some rockin' guitar. I think it came out pretty cool. This an edit from a live stream on my YouTube channel. Check out the video to watch me record each track live.

Soon the trio becomes a quartet as they are greeted by ‘basil’. Basil is new to Static and the two men are introduced. The others seem to know him, including Clareza which is clearly a surprise to Static. The party continues and everyone is getting drunk. Inhibitions are gone. At one point, Basil places a tab of LSD on each of their tongues. Soon afterward, Static leaves to use the restroom and get another drink.

Basil Babbish Blues

It’s a big party and everyone is wearing name tags. When our hero arrives he is a bit overwhelmed by the size of the crowd. As he steps through the doorway the bouncer slaps a sticker on his chest that says ‘static’ and one on his female companion that says ‘clareza’. Everyone’s tag is written in lower case. A familiar face steps forward to greet Static and Clareza. His name tag says ‘amsterdam sam’. The three smile, hug, and walk together into the party.

Amsterdam Sam

They get into a convertible, driven by our hero’s female friend. Speeding up the West Side Highway, they ride from the downtown Manhattan gig to a midtown warehouse after party. Our hero stares at the lights of New Jersey flickering on the river as the George Washington Bridge shines in the distance.

West Side Ride

They wade through a sea of people. It’s a big crowd and everyone knows who Static is. Men and women smile and wink as he passes. The shy musician looks awkwardly away. He sees an open door in the back of the warehouse, through which the party spills out into a dead end alley. Static, Clareza, and Sam head in that direction. It is after midnight, but the lights of the city keep the alley well-lit. There is a live band playing. They have passed out hand-percussion instruments to the crowd. Everyone is playing and clapping along. The words ‘Kalimba Avenue’ are tagged prominently in spray paint on the alley’s brick wall. Static, Clareza, and Sam have fun dancing and drinking.

The Blue Light jazz club house band wraps up a gig with an encore of their signature tune. After laying down a smooth and bluesy solo, the guitar player places his instrument in its stand and leaves the stage as the band keeps grooving. He doesn’t have to worry about his gear. It’ll be there tomorrow night. He meets and kisses a black-haired beauty backstage and two head for the exit.
