Returning to club music with a dirty 130 tune. Fundamentally it's not much more than a carefully distorted 808 bass, a vocal snippet, and a hugely blown up breakbeat. The title is a reference to my twitter rants about the "hot garbage" state the world is in. The sense of doom that seems inevitable if you look at it a certain way and the realisation that we'll always have to crack on with life anyhow.

"The making of this album first started as a recollection of music and sound design I’ve produced over the last couple of years for events and installations—interactive and immersive AV experiences. It was like creating a specific atmosphere for visitors where I’d take them into this sensorial but artificial experience within a very confined spatial domain. This is how the “Climats” concept emerged. 

Longer ambient and generative pieces thus found their own space in my repertoire, allowing me to explore more in-depth, non-linear execution with soft, moody and padded textures. Eventually, all this freeform material became available so I could extract parts of it to build more club-centered and straightforward tracks, but nonetheless, the list grew and all this softer-edged, more introspective works were aggregating over time.

At the time of the lockdown, it felt very natural to get back to it and finalize it as a cohesive whole. It was a very healing and a smooth process to work on these. From isolation, I could open this window to thoughts where I made up my very own Science Fiction story while working on the music. I really wanted it to be a one-hour soundtrack experience that I’d listen at home or driving while my mind would travel across all those musical scapes. It was never a formalized script, but the music spoke for itself with themes of anticipation, collapse, utopia, the world as we know it, the near and far future...

Creating the album was quite a sporadic production process that stretched over several years but it all came together and made a lot of sense in the context of the title I chose : TERRAFORM. The narrative of the album simply unfolds from Dawn to Dusk, and the listener navigates through the different climates that each track embodies."

‘Mercenary’ is a 170bpm half time stepper. Painting a picture of the dystopian cityscape, future Gotham vibes, via ominous sound design, distant alarms, choppy breaks, choral trance melodics and raging bass lines.

‘Access Point’ takes a more emotive route with this nostalgia-fuelled UKG burner. Yearnful & heavenly melodics breathe around skippy & swung rhythms, hard-hitting drums, all over a deep, forboding sub bassline.

"The phrase ‘Protect Me From What I Want’ comes from a Jenny Holzer piece that has resonated with me for a long time now. I can’t speak to her intent in conceptualizing it, but I always likened it to connecting to another person for safety: having someone who loves you to keep you alive. The idea that one could reach a level of indulgence into something so strong that they need help exercising restraint always frightened me. This ep is about falling in love with someone in that space, and losing yourself trying to fight their demons for them. Co-inhabiting a mutually destructive space alongside someone who’s navigating through a greater turmoil than you’re equipped to deal with, and not being strong enough to pull away when it damages you.

The last track on the ep, ‘I Can’t Live Like This’, is the moment of recognition that existing this way isn’t sustainable. It’s when you finally understand that you cannot heal alongside this person, but leaving their side feels like a betrayal; it’s dooming them to collapse under their own vices without you. Relinquishing that love and still being unable to let go. Within that moment of revelation, the hopelessness can feel infinite.

I don’t occupy that space presently, but I have multiple times in the past, and my lack of insight into how I ever left that space is terrifying to me, because it makes me feel like I don’t know how to avoid returning to it with someone new. It’s a disheartening cycle to be potentially caught in.

"My creativity is constantly ebbing and flowing. I go through months of experimentation, learning new tools, banging my head up against the wall with endless versions of tunes I’m just not happy with. And then, if I’m lucky, I hit a patch of several tunes coming together quickly. This EP was exactly that: three tunes that came together completely unexpectedly in a relatively short period of time. All of the new techniques finally melded with my mindset after a long stint of frustration and unproductiveness. No v27c, no overthinking it, just pure vibes and pieces falling into place. I had so much fun making these and I wish I knew the secret sauce for hitting that sweet spot in the studio regularly. I guess you just gotta power through the muck until the inspiration ambushes you and enjoy it while it lasts."
