Bernard Farley, also known as B_X_R_N_X_R_D and Outputmessage, is a self-taught multi-disciplinary artist and founder of Black Techno Matters, a Washington, DC based artist collective and multimedia platform created to uplift black artistry in techno music. The collective creates online and in-person spaces that celebrate the black origins of techno, champion the originators of the genre and gives a space for new creatives to find their voices as artists.

Bernard's music career spans 20 years and covers genres from techno and electronic pop to ambient and experimental music. 

Under the name Outputmessage, he’s put out dozens of albums and EPs starting in 2003 with “Bernard’s Song” (released on Ghostly while he was in college studying number theory and algebraic topology).

As B_X_R_N_X_R_D, his music blurs the line between DJing and live performance, using a suite of roland drum machines, synths, and fx to create mesmerizing and intricate sonic journeys that are “rooted in our past, liberates us in the present, and opens portals into an alternate future.”

Originally born in Queens, NY, Bernard finally settled in Washington, DC in 2006 where he applies his relentless creativity to his passion for community building, particularly in the electronic music scene. Through singing, dancing, photography, video, and lighting, he creates familiar, yet subversive, multi-faceted experiences that explore themes of queer and Black identity.

His recent projects include the albums “Be Here” (Black Magic Recordings) and “hell0" (Black Techno Matters), the interactive and experimental live drum machine music of FUTURE DRUM CIRCLE (which was the closing event for the Washington Project for the Arts 2023 Symposium), the 8 hour album "Love & War", the explosive protest techno music and dance video “Wake the Fuck Up!” and live immersive ambient jam sessions as Smoke & Tea with Patrick Blinkhorn.

Washington, D.C. – BLACK TECHNO MATTERS issues its 24th digital release, Frequencies EP, by live performers, TROVARSI x ALX-106. Together, as a live techno act, TROVARSI and ALX-106 create an improvised, melodic, and driving sound that showcases their shared passion for live electronic music regardless of genre. Their performances are a testament to the power of hardware-driven electronic music, as they seamlessly blend together a wide range of sounds and styles to create a truly unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.

The Frequencies EP is born from pure synchronicity. When together, TROVARSI and ALX-106 are dialed into the same frequency, effortlessly flowing through ideas and sounds. This synergy shaped the foundation of the title track and EP. Using a blend of modular synths, analog gear, and intuitive live tweaking, Frequencies captures the energy of being completely in tune, both with the music and each other. It’s not just music; it’s a sonic snapshot of creative connection. Curiously Strong & Stay Toxic were both recorded live at ADE in 2023 at the Kitchen Club event put on by Analog Kitchen; Bad Bitch & Frequencies were created between Denver and LA, their respective home cities.

BEARCAT is a London-born, New York-based, DJ, producer, and performance artist of Jamaican and Irish descent.

BEARCAT’S DJ sets activate her masterful knowledge of black diasporic genres to evoke a dance floor experience of healing and release; both for herself and others. This incantation of uncompromising, pulsating rhythm and bass has brought her to perform at prestigious nightclubs around the world; festivals like Pitchfork, Afropunk, and Panorama; and museums like The Museum of Modern Art, The Guggenheim, The Whitney, and The Brooklyn Museum. Most recently she was Madonna’s opening DJ for a portion of her U.S. Celebration tour, additionally playing her iconic Oscars party.


BEARCAT’s sets are best described as transcendental, captivating, pounding and eclectic at their core, seemingly bringing together everything from jungle, drum’n’bass, techno, and house; to dembow, dancehall, rap, punk, deconstructed pop edits, and grime. This range of musical interests is reflected further in her work as a producer. BEARCAT has created a number of mixes for Boiler Room, RinseFM, NTS and The Fader. As well as producing fashion soundtracks for brands like Chromat and NoSesso. She's been a part of recent vinyl releases from legendary labels Invadar and Epitaph and a digital release with Nervous Records. BEARCAT’s next release as a producer is an album that spans experimental sounds, blending unlikely genres but stressing visual storytelling through film.

BEARCAT has always embraced music as a part of her lifelong, anti-colonialist project, which began growing up in London; performing on the live music scene and discovering music as an escape from the daily violence of white supremacy. Throughout her journey, BEARCAT has conceived of her work as a therapeutic release, not only for those listening in the present, but as a healing exorcism that channels ancestral pasts through music. BEARCAT has performed and talked on panels regarding anti-racist /-colonial rhetoric, spirituality, queer politics and art at universities including Cornell, Wesleyan, and Oberlin, additionally sharing deeply personal stories of survival and adversities she has overcome.

BEARCAT’S queer politics, vast experience in the industry, and passion for equality inspired her to curate SELTZER, a night prioritizing queer, black and brown, experimental club DJs and artists. Originally born out of DIY spaces in West Philadelphia, SELTZER went on to hold a five-year residency at the infamous NYC nightclub Nowadays where, notably, BEARCAT was the first DJ to ever perform. She was one of the first DJs to be represented by the original female-lead booking agency Discwoman, and as a part of this collective, helped diversify club lineups around the world.

Izzy has an appetite for the diverse sounds of the world. Her sets are a captivating blend of infectious house global grooves, and underground club anthems, guaranteed to keep the dance floor moving.

NYC-based and Maryland-born, Izzy's musical journey began through her mother’s eclectic ear. Growing up Izzy was surrounded by the infectious energy of House, the nostalgic melodies of neo-soul, and the pulsating grooves of Latin pop. Her sets reflect this global perspective, seamlessly blending genres and cultures to create a unique and captivating soundscape.

Her ultimate goal is to create an immersive and unforgettable experience for every listener, transporting them through the vibrant world of global dance music.

As we prepare for spring and the world is healing from a harshly cold winter, we've tapped @smokeandteadc (@blinkhorn and @b_x_r_n_x_r_d) to bring us the latest entry in the BMR mix series entitled "Music Is Medicine." BMRMIX007 is a dreamlike illustration of carefully designed synthesizer sounds and deliberate track selections that use an unreleased recording of a Smoke & Tea performance at the @blacktechnomatters' 2024 Juneteenth Healing in the Park event in DC's Malcolm X park as the canvas for the mix. One will find themselves floating in the astral ether wrapped in a cocoon of sound for just long enough until the sweet call of reality is refracted back through the lens of pop memories, smoky jazz, and the warmth of friendship. Smoke & Tea invite you to get lost in the alternate reality they have created through an ingenious blend of an unreleased live recording, thoughtful track selections from Bernard and Patrick, and additional live synthesizer improvisations that the cosmic duo recorded at Black Techno Matters' HQ (https://youtu.be/k6l7W5-LDD4). Smoke & Tea's entry in the BMR mix series offers the listener almost an hour of healing sounds that prove "Music Is Medicine."

This recording feels like the closest I've gotten to the essence of a l00p. It's a simple disco loop that I let play on my xdj while freaking the mixer eq and fx live. It feels full circle to connect the abstractness of the l00p concept with the groovy disco sound that I grew up listening to on my mother's record player. It's all about falling into the groove and flowing with the energy of the music. I hope you enjoy this one!
