Baba Sound presents Mikeylous Mixtape mixed by Father Kutta.
Mikeylous (formerly N. Mikey) a.k.a. the Wakeup Boss made his way from church choir to local talent shows to become a resident Deejay at Jack Ruby, Metro Media, and many more famous Soundsystems in Jamaica. Starting inna the 80ies he recorded for Penthouse, Shocking Vibes and many more big Producers and also helped many younger Superstars to climb the ladder of their musical journey from start.

Iconic reggae and dancehall producer, King Jammy (Lloyd James), digs into his master recording archive and brings the legendary Gregory Isaacs' late 1980s/1990s catalog to a new generation by pairing him with veterans Shaggy, Sean Paul, Bounty Killer, Junior Reid, Chaka Demus, Alborosie, Bunny General, and Ras Shiloh and now generation artists Jesse Royal, Projexx, Aza Lineage, Ras Demo, Brandon The Messenjah, Claire Angel, and Flinix.

King Jammy, Producer

Born Lloyd James and initially known as Prince Jammy, he became the undisputed King when digital production took over Jamaican music in the mid-1980s. His influence on the development of dub music and reggae production is incalculable.

Having refined his mixing acumen under his mentor King Tubby in the late 70s, Jammy developed his own aesthetic as reggae turned the corner into the 1980s, enhanced by access to the most relevant new artists from his neighborhood of Waterhouse. First with Black Uhuru, then with an array of singers including Johnny Osbourne, Barry Brown, Junior Reid, and most famously Wayne Smith, whose "Under Mi Sleng Teng" is considered transitional marker in a globally influential continuum of music.

By the 1990s, King Jammy's productions and his soundsystem were synonymous with reggae and dancehall itself. He has also overseen one of the most successful clashing soundsystems in the world for three decades and was honored with a tribute set at Reggae Sumfest 2023 in Jamaica.

Gregory Isaacs - Singer, Cool Ruler

Gregory Isaacs, OD, (1951-2010) is one of the most important and prolifc singers in Jamaican music history. His "Night Nurse" (1982) is one of the most popular and recognizable songs in the entire reggae cannon, streaming more than 100 million, as of 2023. One of the cream of reggae's gifted crop of singers to emerge in the 70s, he remained relevant for decades, finding his stride at the apex of the Lovers Rock era, with "Night Nurse," "Top Ten," "My Only Lover," and "Soon Forward" helping define the genre. He stayed at the top of the game as reggae embraced digital production, with the iconic "Rumours" for Gussie Clarke.

Thomas felt in love with nagging jamaican skanks since from his earliest age and beggan producing 5 years ago, alone in his room at the beggining. Musically self-taught, he created a melodic Dub, centered aroung organic leads. A music which wants you well, here is Shanks' motto... Dub also means bass generously provided here !

"Shanks" because at the beginning, I thought we said "shanksing" instead of "skanking"...

This musical project mix digital Dub with various styles and sounds from around the world. Shanks plays with style structures in order to obtain a diversified result. This brings to a dynamic and festive music, on which we can easily move our bodies. Several musicians also collaborated (saxophonist, guitarist, banjoist, flutist) to give an acoustic touch which perfectly fits with digital riddims, for our ears' pleasure !

This first Culture Dub Records' EP marks the start of Shanks project stage production !

Pris d'amour dès son plus jeune âge pour les skanks lancinants Jamaïquains, Thomas a commencé à produire il y a 5 ans, au départ seul dans sa chambre Franc Comtoise. Musicalement autodidacte, il crée un Dub mélodique, centré autour de leads organiques. Une musique qui vous veut du bien, tel est le crédo de Shanks... Et qui dit Dub, dit forcément basses, généreusement fournies en supplément  !

"Shanks" parce qu'au début, je croyais que ça "shanksait"...

Ce projet musical mélange le digital Dub avec une variété de styles et de sonorités venues du monde entier. Shanks entend jouer avec les structures du style afin d'obtenir un rendu très diversifié. Il en résulte une musique dynamique et festive, sur laquelle on peut sans mal se dandiner. Plusieurs musiciens ont également collaboré (saxophoniste, guitariste, banjoïste, flûtiste) afin d'apporter une touche acoustique qui se marie parfaitement avec les riddims digitaux pour le plus grand bonheur de nos esgourdes ! 

Ce premier EP chez Culture Dub Records marque le début de la production scénique du projet par Shanks !

Members of Papir & Causa Sui finalise Edena Gardens trilogy.

True to El Paraiso fashion, Dens concludes a trilogy of albums, aptly spelling out the last third of the group’s name. And true to form, the band turns inwards rather than outwards, drawing on deep shades of ambient, slowcore, and the ghost of Mark Hollis. While maintaining their psychedelic edge, the trio weaves the lines between genres in a way that’s becoming a signature of its own. Never in a hurry, but always moving somewhere.

Causa Sui drummer Jakob Skøtt & Martin Rude’s bass and baritone guitar lay out a robust yet fleeting foundation. Papir’s Nicklas Sørensen’s glistening guitar lines never felt more free and explorative. While The Durutti Column tribute Vini’s Lament is drenched in nostalgia, a cut like Morgensol (Morning Sun in Danish) explodes in Popol Vuh-esque gloomy euphoria. 

Engineered by Jonas Munk & produced by Jakob Skøtt, the album culls hours of free improvisation into a coherent size. Seamless edits and studio wizardry enhance the feeling of an almost narrative nature as the album progresses. Invoking anything from a crackling campfire, rattling bones, and the singing of sand dunes. The culmination lies in the 14-minute track Sienita. A fully formed blistering improvisation, abandoning any studio trickery, besides a singly dubbed organ, rising and falling like the tide.

Is Dens the final chapter of Edena Gardens? Who knows, and who cares… Edena Gardens is all about the present anyway.
