Nées de la nécessité pour les esclaves aux origines diverses de communiquer à l’insu des colons, les langues créoles sont le fruit du mélange de sens et de sons empruntés aux langues et dialectes de peuples rentrés en collision du fait de l’Histoire. Plus de 10 millions de personnes sur trois continents ont la créolité en partage depuis trois siècles. Dans ces communautés et pays structurés par l’histoire de la colonisation esclavagiste et racialisée, les langues créoles sont partout uniques en leur genre et en constante évolution.  

Cette sélection assemble quelques exemples de mises en musique des problématiques liées à l'utilisation de la langue créole dans un contexte postcolonial. Nous nous intéressons dans ce mix aux territoires francophones des Antilles et de l’Océan Indien. Continuer à y parler le créole de sa famille et de son terroir, c’est donc autant une façon d’honorer ses racines africaines et familiales que de faire (sur)vivre sa culture minoritaire face à la France et au français. Dans ces zones insulaires entre deux eaux, la diglossie prend souvent le pas sur le bilinguisme, le français éclipsant le créole dans des perspectives d’ascension sociale. On peut y voir le combat de David contre Goliath, de la ruralité contre la mondialisation, de la modestie provinciale contre le prestige social, des descendants d’esclaves contre les néo-colons. Être fier de sa langue et de son accent, c’est à l’échelle individuelle une étape importante dans la connaissance et l'affirmation de soi et à l’échelle communautaire un pas de plus vers la sauvegarde de sa culture d’origine dans une planète globalisée où se lissent les différences au profit des mastodontes. 

La musique est un lieu idéal d’affirmation d’une fierté en construction et le moyen d’expression d’une certaine "confusion" (comme le chante Erick Paul) créée par ce bilinguisme qui écartèle. On parle aussi de musiques créoles: "ni noires, ni blanches", comme l’écrivait Bertrand Dicale, ces musiques sont elles aussi la fusion entre les mélodies et rythmes africains et européens des générations précédentes ainsi que des influences présentes sur leur lieu de création. Voix et porte-voix du peuple, des musiciens créolophones luttent contre ce complexe d’infériorité et d’insécurité linguistique, adressant un message de revalorisation et de réappropriation heureuse face aux dangers de l’assimilation: "Parler français, non !.. Parler créole !" clame le chanteur haïtien Rodrigue Millien.

@dj-fulltono is a visionary in the genre of footwork. Having had an enormous influence on the shaping and evolution of the genre in his home country Japan, his sonic explorations have long since spread and continue to influence the footwork community worldwide. His minimalistic yet dense, shuffling, shifting, polyrhythmic beats drift, slip and catch up with themselves, keeping every dancer on their toes. His releases on Exit Records, Booty Tune as well as collaborations with Skip Club Orchestra are some of the most unique and forward thinking productions in the genre. Much to our chagrin many of this prolific producer's productions remain unreleased but luckily for us this mix, which was recorded live at Compufunk in Osaka in 2023, is a treasure trove of his secret gems. After two decades of traveling the world as a DJ and VJ, Babani's
head honcho, Avneesh, ventures into music production with his
debut EP, SEGA XPERIMENT #001.

This project was born out of a series of creative experiments with
friends and fellow producers, allowing the Mauritian artist to craft his own distinctive sound. Avneesh focuses on the traditional Sega music of Mauritius, collaborating with UK-based Mauritian DJ/ Producer K. Monday for this first EP.

The two raw tracks on SEGA XPERIMENT #001 capture the vibrant energy and groove that define Avneesh’s DJ sets. While deeply rooted in traditional Mauritian music, these tracks seamlessly blend with contemporary club beats, creating a unique hybrid sound.

SEGA XPERIMENT #001 is a standout addition to the Babani label,
offering two powerful tracks that immediately captivate with their
innovative take on electronic Sega music.
