Since V/VM's nineteen hour “The Death of Rave” project marked a nails-in-the coffin moment to the foregone UK-rave scene, as well as Burial's symbolic post-rave comedown and, more recently, Lee Gamble's dissection of old jungle tapes, a collective subliminal interest in excavating the sonic architecture of this period seems particularly rife. From the ebullient dissent of the outdoor hardcore and acid house raves, through the period post-1994's Criminal Justice Act which harboured darker variants of jungle, darkside, and drum 'n'bass, the sonic potentialities which unfolded themselves then have undeniably flowed strongly in the bloodline of UK music ever since. Using the “then” and “now” as points of flight, a complex social and musical ecology emerges in which, over a period of more than twenty years, musical aesthetic as well as substantial socio-economic, materialistic, and structural changes have become apparent. Drawing on debates on the “hardcore continuum” and “hauntology” as detailed by Simon Reynolds and Mark Fisher among others, The Death Of Rave focuses on the sonic cycle of death and rebirth, reflecting on the present and future of music via the past.

For forty years the Cold War defined the world in which we all lived, shaping our political choices, killing over 25 million people, and nearly leading to the destruction of humanity itself on one very special day in October 1962.  Thirty years later the Cold War was no more and the world – we were told – could now look forward to a "new world order". Yet it was not be. America under G.W Bush revived spectres of the past by talking of a new 'axis of evil'.  Russian reform turned into Putin’s annexation of Crimea. While in China talk of a 'peaceful rise' was replaced by an altogether more assertive stance which seemed to question the established rules of the international community. This discussion asks and tries to answer three big questions: In what sense did the Cold War represent a revolution in world history? Was 1989 yet another – very different kind of - revolution in international affairs? And why does the Cold War we all thought dead and buried continue to exercise such influence on our discourses about the modern world? Anne Applebaum (@anneapplebaum) is a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Institute of Global Affairs at LSE and a columnist for the Washington Post. Jonathan Fenby (@JonathanFenby) is a former editor of the Observer and South China Morning Post and a founding partner and Managing Director of Trusted Sources Research Service. He is an author of several popular books on China, including the acclaimed Tiger Head, Snake Tails; The Penguin History of Modern China; and Will China Dominate the 21st Century?  Gideon Rachman (@gideonrachman) is the chief foreign affairs columnist for the Financial Times. In recent years, the relationship between sound, gender and technology has gained increasing attention. There have been a number of practitioner networks, informational resources, theoretical interventions, archives and educational initiatives established in the hope of tackling the gendered exclusions from and disparities within the technocentric fields of electronic music, audio production and sound arts. Many of these projects can be understood to share some of the concerns and ideals of cyberfeminism. Emerging in the early 1990s, cyberfeminism sought to explore the potentials and possibilities of technology, computing and Cyberspace for feminist praxis. However, to talk of cyberfeminism or indeed a cyberfeminist ethos in the singular is something of a misnomer: we consider it more appropriate to speak of plural cyberfeminisms, with various agendas, methods, perspectives and priorities.

This panel discussion follows on from a month-long online reading group which focused on the issue of “decolonizing sonic cyberfeminisms,” raising questions about the Eurocentric conceptualisations of technology, sound and gender implicit in much recent activism around these themes. It precedes a larger event planned for 4-5th May 2017 at the University of Lincoln which will continue to explore Sonic Cyberfeminisms. In addressing the issue of “Doing Sonic Cyberfeminisms,” the panel will explore what is at stake in the “now” of electronic music, audio production and sound arts, and asks what possible strategies of sonic resistance can be practiced

An archetype of Homo Oeconomicus occupies the White House: for Donald Trump, democracy is an enemy of “free markets“ and all that counts successful is the uncompromising deal. Trump’s strongest weapon is an apocalyptic populism which fuels aggressive nationalist movements. Their goal is to abolish the democratic order: the rule of law, its institutions and the so-called “establishment.” What are the consequences of this devastating campaign against democracy? And how can it be stopped? Did Europe find viable answers in Emmanuel Macron and Jeremy Corbyn?

After lectures by Thomas Piketty (2014), Naomi Klein (2015), and Paul Mason (2016) Blätter für deutsche und internationale Politik dedicates its fourth Democracy Lecture to the threatened future of democracy. 1920 wurde Alexander Berkman zusammen mit Emma Goldman und 247 weiteren politischen Gefangenen aus dem Gefängnis in den USA in die junge Sowjetunion abgeschoben. Seine Ankunft in der Russischen Revolution beschrieb der Anarchist als den schönsten Tag seines Lebens. Die Enttäuschung folgte schnell. Nach der Niederschlagung des Kronstädter Aufstands verließen Berkman und Goldman das sozialistische Russland und kritisierten scharf dessen autoritäre Verwandlung. Aber war diese Entwicklung notwendig? Oder hätte die Geschichte auch anders ausgehen können? Zum 100. Jahrestag der Russischen Revolution fragt Bini Adamczak, wie sich Scheitern und Niederlage der Revolution hätten vermeiden lassen: Gab es die historische Möglichkeit auf eine egalitäre, libertäre und solidarische Union der Räte? Welcher Weg hätte dafür eingeschlagen werden müssen – und von wem? Die Autorin diskutiert historische Modelle wie kontrahistorische Potenziale und stellt die Frage: Unter welchen Bedingungen hätten Berkman und seine politischen Nachfahren – wir – noch schönere Tage erleben können?

Bini Adamczak: «Der schönste Tag im Leben des Alexander Berkman»

Speaker(s): Professor Lilie Chouliaraki, Professor Robin Wagner-Pacifici, Professor Barbie Zelizer | What do #MeToo, refugee selfies and oil paintings have in common? They are all part of a mixed and changing culture of witnessing. This interdisciplinary panel explores the different media platforms and practices of spectatorship that today enable our moral and political engagement with human vulnerability. It asks not only how the digital has shifted the terms of our visual encounters with bodies-in-pain but also shows how our testimonial cultures remain the same. This is not only because contemporary witnessing mixes media, old and new, but crucially also because it is still traversed by historical power relations and social hierarchies. Lilie Chouliaraki (@chouliaraki_l) is a Professor of Media and Communications in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. Robin Wagner-Pacifici is the University in Exile Professor of Sociology at the New School for Social Research.
