2/1/14 JG's Tune of the Week! Phantom Power by Babyhead, taken from BabyBoom Town. 
JG says  "My love for this track is twofold.
1. Musical: It is one of my favourite bass lines - a lil' Fluff number - full of bubbly dubness with a peppering of syncopation. Some of the brass and guitar harmonies stretch out quite a little for a Babyhead track, Its got a great great groove and feel and I like the simple top line in the choruses. 

2. Lyrical: There is an important point made here about being aware of the injustices many people face at the hands of governmental actions. We are comfortable in this part of the world and we like to enjoy life and party but we can't ignore the part we play in global events. Tom discusses the Iraq invasion of 2003 and how the british government ignored the protests of thousands of people, suggesting that next time we take our protests to the city - as in the square mile - because thats where the money is, thats where the power is. This did happen with Occupy in 2011 (I think) and had quite a divisive effect, but a powerful one."

From 1992 to 2016, Babyhead smashed the festival scene open with their electric stage shows, dynamic energy and snappy suits. Throughout their reign as the U.K.s premiere underground ska hip-hop supergroup, they stockpiled a cache of heavy remixes, which are now brought together for the first time.

The 'Dubplates' release showcases some of their biggest tunes in a very different light, stripped back to their raw elements and letting the groove drive them. Representing one of the main cornerstones of the Babyhead sound - dub - the tracks take on a new life, unearthing treasures within and amplifying the essence of what inspired the band.

The remixers are drawn from across the Bristol scene, and reflect the depth of bass culture in the city. Local stalwart Dub From Atlantis, horndog Mister Long, Se Fire's Sose and Tyun, the deadly Small Fry HiFi, The Beams' Random Project, Optimus Prime's PR-1 and sticksman Lupo incorporate elements of dub, drum and bass, dubstep, ska and reggae into their heavyweight mixes.

Sorely missed from the live arena, the release of 'Dubplates' helps softens the blow of Babyhead’s absence as well as celebrate their brief but brilliant reign.

Dubplates will be available to download or stream from Friday September 21st on the band’s own Cookie Cutter Records.
