At the vanguard of Melbourne's bustling underground music scene you’ll find Surprise Chef. A band very much on the rise, who with two exceptional albums under their belts, are picking up a rapidly swelling fanbase across the world. Working out of the College of Knowledge stable (their home / studio / record label namesake), the band’s take on instrumental cinematic soul and funk has connected with listeners across multiple scenes and genres. Their intoxicatingly laidback sound, which pairs expertly crafted hooks with a seriously funky, watertight rhythm section, has earned them a wide appeal and made their tracks ripe for interpretation.

When floating ideas for potential remixers, two names came to the fore, Masters At Work and Harvey Sutherland. MAW have a long history with Mr Bongo having remixed the Brit-funk classic ‘Dancing In Outer Space’ by Atmosfear for the label in 1997, and releasing the original track, ‘Brazilian Beat’ in 2000. With their studio collaboration now back in full swing, it was the perfect time to inject the MAW magic back into the label. They picked ‘Crayfish Caper’ from the band’s first album ‘All News Is Good News’ as their choice of track to remix. The ’Nuyorican Broken Remix' sees MAW stepping into their Nuyorican Soul guise. A Latin shuffle meets an afro-beat rhythm and some very chunky broken beats, which all underpins an infectious melody constructed around the original track’s bassline. They pair this with horns and synths that add a flourish and reveal new layers as the track develops. It’s a sound that is uniquely Nuyorican Soul and a welcome return for fans of this aspect of their phenomenal output. The 'Masters At Work Remix’ is straight up vintage MAW in House mode. It takes many of the same elements found in the 'Nuyorican Broken Remix' and points things in a House direction. It’s 4/4, but the beats have that Kenny Dope trademark swing. Tough, but oozing soul. Add to that heavy bass, vocal cuts, fierce horns and saxophone, layered synths, and that undeniable MAW bounce. 

Rounding off the package is the remix from Harvey Sutherland. Having made international waves since 2013 with his unique take on dance music, Harvey has long been on Mr Bongo’s remix radar, but until now we hadn’t managed to get that ambition over the line. This time around the stars aligned perfectly. Surprise Chef and Harvey Sutherland are both Melbourne residents and they had already been working on projects together. The band set things up and Harvey chose to remix ‘New Ferrari’ from their latest album, ‘Daylight Savings’. His take on the track sees things venturing into dubby-disco territory. A dreamy, cosmic, bass-heavy, sweeping synth-led workout, that retains yet reinterprets the catchy-as-hell hooks from the original track. A roller with serious muscle!

Flamingo Pier are a New Zealand collective that consists of local DJs Luke Walker, Dominic Jones and Bradley Craig. Having first popped up on the scene roughly 4 years ago with a self-released debut, the lads have recently joined forces with London-based label Soundway Records to come out with their first proper, self-titled record. Consisting of four original tracks, Flamingo Pier have chosen to take us on a journey that's strongly influenced by the boogie, disco, Afro and classic house that their parties are known for. Slick, rolling disco synths and punchy drum machines are woven in with Afro-centric percussion and dreamy vocal chants, for an exotic disco-boogie experience from start to finish.

If that were not enough to get you excited about this release, we have a remix of one of their tracks "Find Your Way" that comes from the talented duo Earthboogie, who consistently come out with music that's dedicated to all things “intergalactic, cosmic, tribal and terrestrial." Compared to the original, this rendition is more full-bodied - adding in a great deal of texture that ranges from welcomed horned melodies to alluring vocals that fall directly in-line with the mood I believe Flamingo Pier set out to achieve. This isn't as much a remix as it's an indirect extension of the band itself. My hat goes off to Earthboogie for taking an already great track and helping it reach even higher heights. Bravo!

This EP is being released to coincide with Flamingo Pier's Festival in Waiheke, New Zealand on February 9th 2019, which I believe is already sold out. If you've missed your chance to attend, this is quite the consolation prize.

Gadi Mizrahi - Bio 

Since he first hit the scene in 2001, Gadi Mizrahi has been one of New York's most essential new artists. As half of the duo Wolf + Lamb, he transformed Brooklyn's underground party scene, releasing modern house records by local acts and throwing legendary parties at The Marcy Hotel. As a producer, his deviously playful style of house has proved as infectious abroad as it is at home, earning him international praise and gigs at clubs like Fabric, Watergate and Club Der Visionaire. And as a seasoned underground DJ, his subtle finesse and sense of groove makes the party get deeper, weirder and way more sexy. 

Sometime around the turn of the millennium, Gadi met Zev Eisenberg at a party, and Wolf + Lamb was born almost immediately. Their methods were DIY right from the start: instead of sending demos to labels who didn't fit their sound, they founded Wolf + Lamb Music and released their own tracks digitally. Rather than playing boring gigs in Manhattan to make a buck, they leased a loft in Williamsburg and turned it into The Marcy Hotel, now one of NYC's most notorious venues, with parties that regularly run past noon the next day. In the beginning, most of W+L's artists were young and inexperienced, but Gadi coached them personally, pushing them until their tracks were strong enough to be released. By the end of 2009, Wolf + Lamb had put out almost 70 records, received accolades from Mixmag, Groove and countless blogs, and been named #3 label of the year by Resident Advisor. 

Wolf + Lamb continued to grow over the course of 2010, and so did Gadi himself. In June, he and Zev released their debut album, Love Someone, which made Mix Mag's album of the month and landed the pair on the cover of DJ Mag. From there, Gadi spearheaded The Wolf + Lamb Experience, a tour that hit some of house and techno's most important hubs (Detroit, Chicago, New York, London, Berlin) with a full cast of W+L characters in tow, including Soul Clap, Deniz Kurtel, Nico Jaar and No Regular Play. The label's profile was steadily on the rise, but Gadi didn't let himself rest, instead he launched a new vinyl-only imprint, Double Standard Records, and released an armful of 12-inches by himself, Soul Clap and former Beirut trumpet player Greg Paulus. As he spends the summer on a solo tour of Europe, he has the best of both worlds: a front man for house music's most well-loved rat pack, but with total independence to pursue his own ideas. He still has the easy demeanor of a party DJ from Brooklyn, but by now, Gadi Mizrahi is a global trendsetter.
