Ryland Angel, tenor, and Rick Erickson, organist, formally began the "Schemelli Project" earlier this season with performances in New York, Houston, and Galveston. The project is to, over time, record all 69 of the songs in this collection either newly written or harmonized by Johann Sebastian Bach for a hymnal project in the Naumburg Diocese containing over 900 hymns. This set of pieces contains songs both well known and little known. In addition to presenting the songs in German, we are also bringing new English translations to life, working with Madeleine Marshall, whose creative translation contributions will be known to many. Then, we surround these works with free organ improvisations, hoping to bring yet more new life. The first recording here is from the first performance in New York in October of 2018.
