If you like your techno bruised and bleeding, you’d have taken note of Manchester’s AnD. Over the last few years they’ve been making their presence known with a series of unbridled releases for labels like Horizontal Ground, Black Sun Records, Repitch Recordings and their own self-titled stable. “Harder” has indeed been the duo’s mantra, bellowed stony-faced from the rasping recedes of industrial’s brittle outer rim. But it hasn’t always been this way. Before the broken bones and caustic, pitch-black tear-outs there’s been deep and dubby reprieves, techy dubstep and even washed-out drum and bass on the likes of Idle Hands, Project Squared and Hidden Hawaii all with equaled astuteness.

It’s clear there’s little out of AnD’s reach, and they’re certainly not bowing down to anyone. ‘Kundalini’ then, AnD’s debut EP for Electric Deluxe, is not something to be taken lightly. The EP opens with a trio of patented AnD-style monsters, cataclysmic techno siblings all venomous and rusted through. It’s a dark and unforgiving trail with these guys as drill sergeant, until “ICDBYC” that is. Not quite the calm before the storm, here we have AnD pull back from the bloody onslaught to turn a cleaner, more calculated sort of weapon. Cool and tactical shadow skulking, trimmed with IDM. This one is just as deadly!

Before Perc’s eagerly awaited second album ‘The Power And The Glory’ is released, Perc Trax is offering up this first glimpse of one of the album's key moments. ‘Take Your Body Off’ is the album’s most focused club track and has already been road-tested by Perc across Europe at gigs ranging from small basement clubs to 5,000 strong festival crowds. 

Built upon a foundation of stabbing kick drums, rolling triplet snare patterns and a wall of sub bass, the track is completed by the vocals of Dan Chandler of London noise rock outfit Dethscalator. The piercing, guttural vocals, more akin to the short sharp shock of a metal performance provide the kind of sonic jolt techno used to trade in, yet which is rarely heard these days.

Perc - Take Your Body Off (Perc Trax)

Bryan Black AKA Black Asteroid returns to Electric Deluxe with his most precise and daring invention yet. ‘Metal’ picks up from where the ‘Black Acid EP’ left off with more sonic alchemies sounding unlike anything else. The former Prince engineer turned MOTOR front man turned galvanic techno DJ, producer and performer has had an incredible run in his latest guise. Since debuting on CLR with ‘The Engine EP’ over a series of well-shaped and energetic releases Bryan Black has forged a distinct and unique signature that is tactile, otherworldly and utterly timeless. 

Ingenious sound design has become his calling card, while Black’s award winning MOTOR heritage never seems far behind. Moments on ‘Black Acid’ felt like he brought the band to the DJ booth. And with ‘Metal’ the sentiment rings even truer. This is “heavy metal techno,” says Black, “but in a very restrained and controlled way.” Indeed the hum of guitars (synths routed through guitar pedals) whirr through lead track “Metal,” a taut and punchy workout spliced with token Black Asteroid weirdness. Meanwhile Black gets even more contained on the masterfully metronomic “Turbine”.

Droid affiliate Luis Flores and Pinion (Bobby Dowell) then split “Metal” off into its opposing sectors. Flores takes things straight the dance floor, while Pinion ramps up the noise and clangor to turn in a real unholy “Metal” monster. Another must for Black Asteroid fans and for those who like their techno cast from mysterious molds.

It was early 2007 when Inigo Kennedy inaugurated Token. Since that Identify Yourself 12” the Belgian label has gone from strength to strength, integrating both Kennedy and Ashley Burchett, aka Ø [Phase], into becoming integral cogs in the Token machine. In between releases by Grovskopa, Oscar Mulero and Go Hiyama, both Ø [Phase] and Inigo Kennedy dominated Token’s output, but it wasn’t until Burchett’s watershed Binary Opposition that Token received the shower of praise it deserved. Following this, label founder Kr!z issued three remix 12”s of that release which, including Token regulars, took in a profound cast of producers to reprocess “Binary Opposition” by the way of Sigha, Peter Van Hoesen, Planetary Assault Systems and Ben Klock. It was here Token stamped their authority on contemporary techno.

Since then Token has grown exponentially, bringing into their fold artists like Xhin, Mark Broom and Rødhåd, while Ctrls, formally one half of Northern Structures, has seen his solo career flourish on Token with the release of five records to date, and he joins Inigo Kennedy and Ø [Phase] as a label stalwart. Additionally this year, Orphx and Ancient Methods debuted their relentless Eschaton collaboration on Token, and Christian Wünsch’s Spherical Coordinates dalliance with Oscar Mulero has gained even more momentum with a second release called Kinematics Equations. Now, seven years after that debut Kennedy record, Token present Aphelion, a nine-track CD and triple vinyl grandstand of new and exclusive material from label regulars and like-minded artists whom Token founder Kr!z specifically commissioned for this milestone release.

The penultimate record before Aphelion was a second Token 12” by Rødhåd, another artist adding to the cultivation of the label’s sound and roster, and for this compilation the Berliner supplies his cosmically inspired “Haumea”. Joining the Dystopian founder on Aphelion are three of the UK’s most influential techno artists: Surgeon, James Ruskin and Luke Slater under his Planetary Assault Systems alias who provide Token with solo material for the first time after previously appearing on the imprint in remix form. Entirely new names to grace the label via Aphelion include Stroboscopic Artefacts founder Lucy, and Blawan and Pariah's Karenn project, while label faithfuls Inigo Kennedy,  Ø [Phase] and Ctrls naturally commit three Token defining productions.

Casting one’s eye over Token’s back catalogue and it’s clear to see the label is a staunch advocate of absolute techno, remaining steadfast in issuing quality material that remains true to classic strands of the genre regardless of its popularity flux. In that respect, Aphelion - a word used to describe the point in orbit when a planet or comet is farthest from the sun - provides a simple analogy that the magnetic force of Token, unfazed by the shadows cast by popular opinion, will proudly shine light on their artists and given styles. 

“We started in an era where our genre was very unpopular,” Kr!z explains. “And in the end that seemed a big advantage for us, because when everyone was giving up, we started our mission.” Regularly hosting label nights in prominent clubs around the world, Token has become a label supported by a wide-ranging body of artists like Âme and Ben Klock to Efdemin, Truss and Ancient Methods. With the label now branching out into album and compilation territory, Token’s duty to techno may not yet be accomplished, but it’s been a job well done.

After a beautifully sensitive chord-led introduction in the form of 'Shifted Reality', showing off some rare after-hours vibes from the Cleric studio, we hit the peak time once again with 'Plexus'. A stripped and perfectly balanced moment of percussive DJ Tool glory, all we need are claps, Kicks and FX to get the room working overtime!

Old school killer 'Seit 1990' graces the B2 position with an addictive bleep-fest in the true spirit of underground, warehouse Techno... Simply a must have for the purist minimal heads out there, and the new breed alike.

Cleric closes out the EP with a mesmerising down-tempo composition entitled 'Dissapointment'. Its a touching ode to early 90s Electronics, and it will be no surprise to some that the Northern English producer shows his true colours on this wonderfully atypical track - echoes of Warp there to be found if desired.
