Braskaminen brinner som ett hjärta som vägrar ge upp,
och glöggen kokar långsamt, som om tiden gett upp.
Det är december och världen är en gammal stålstad,
snön ligger tung över allt som aldrig blev sagt.
Du står i dörren som en skugga jag nästan känner,
och jag vet att det är jul men ändå känns det som
att natten vill äta oss hela,
att tystnaden sjunger ett namn vi glömde.


Men värmen slår i väggarna,
som ett löfte mitt i allt det blå.
Och jag hör hur gatorna tystnar,
hur världen sakta böjer sig och slår.
Och du säger det är jul nu,
men jag känner bara ljuset från din hand.
Braskaminsnätter,
och vi brinner långsamt bort från allt vi kan.


Det luktar kanel och nån slags gammal tröst,
vi skrattar åt ingenting som om vi minns hur man gör.
Fotspår smälter på hallmattan,
som om nån just lämnat men glömt vart den skulle.
Och du sätter på en skiva som knastrar som en gammal vän,
och hela rummet blir en brottsplats för allt vi aldrig sa,
men elden dansar som om den förstod,
som om den visa vägen ur natten.


Och där, i det sotiga ljuset,
ser jag alla vintrar som gick oss förbi.
Alla löften som aldrig blev brutna,
bara bortlagda — till någon annan tid.


Men värmen slår i väggarna,
och tystnaden brister som glas.
Det är du och jag och kaminens glöd,
och allt det där vi trodde vi tappade någonstans.
Braskaminsnätter,
och jag hör hur världen sjunger genom sprucken fasad.
Ingen jul kan rädda oss,
men här inne känns det nästan som den kan.


Snön faller tungt över stan,
men här inne brinner allt vi minns.
Elden drar långa skuggor av oss,
som om vi var större än vi nånsin är.
Och jag tänker:
Om det här är julen —
låt den aldrig ta slut,
låt den stanna som ett hjärtslag i mörkret.
