@saintrobbers debut on Neuropunk!

There's no shortage of talented up-and-coming artists emerging from Russia lately, but not often do they have a sound palette as diverse as the Saint Robbers from St. Petersburg. After their great debut release on Timeofnight Recordings in 2020 and their huge bootleg of Phetsta's "Intergalactic", it didn't take long for other labels to take notice of them. Releases on Magnetude's & Task Horizon's label Evolution Chamber and others like Ignescent and Tonrecords followed. After massive appearances on Neuropunk festivals all over the area, and multiple spots on the Neuropunk podcast, it is now finally time for them to also emerge from the NEUROPUNK FORGE with their double single NOTARIC / TORN SHOE!

Alright, let's go over the plan one more time. Our target is NOTARIC, and yes, that's both his last name and his job description. He has been making shady deals with all sorts of criminals since forever and it's time someone taught him a lesson. Not that you and I dislike criminals, we are robbers after all, but his clients really are the worst of the worst. We strike during the night, wearing our trustworthy balaclava and black hoodie combo. I guess we could change into some new shoes soon though, these ones are a bit loose. Anyway, this security system is more involved than our usual targets. First, we've got laser motion sensors, which we'll disable with this malware I got off the dark web. Next up, we have to take care of the security cameras, but that's nothing a bolt cutter can't fix. Then we just need to get into the safe without alerting the guards. Easy!

The following night we go on about the heist exactly as planned. We sneak into the building unnoticed and launch our malware attack with my laptop in the hallway. One defense down, two to go. We continue into the next room and... the cameras are wireless?! I'll never trust the intel from that dark web guy ever again. Luckily, I can reconfigure the laptop to act as a signal jammer for the camera's connection.
Okay, time for the safe. After a few minutes of working on the mechanism, we hear faint footsteps outside. They have noticed us?! I realise the sole of my mate's TORN SHOE is gone, likely still lying
around in the hallway. We quickly open up the safe, grab as much as we can and bolt straight out of the nearest window, barely escaping the guards. As quietly as possible we slink through the streets back into our hideouts. That's the last time I'm taking that guy with me!

The pseudo-friendly eerie nature of ‘Slime Gland’ leads the way, with nostalgic synth lines and airy pads punctuated by sharp steppy percussion. The amen-laced structures of ‘Meanwhile’ build into a lean assault on the ears with a bassline in a deep stealth profile tucked tight against the beat. ‘No Brain, No Pain’ delivers a schizophrenic and penetrative sonic influx, leaning towards the comedic but retaining an overwhelmingly destructive form. ‘Wipe Out’ carries the powerful vocal of Eatbrain MC favourite NUKLEAR, whilst ‘It Could Be a Trap’ completes the EP with an effective and exceptional half stepper that seeks to obliterate everything in its rave-fuelled path.

Following ‘The Nightwalkers’ EP that saw them win over the Eatbrain fanbase in 2013, Slovenian production crew Telekinesis have gone on to dominate the European drum & bass scene with heavy touring and an ever-growing fanbase. He fled without words from his workplace, the other labourers around glancing quickly up at their fellow tearing across the derelict site of their toil. Ducking between the scaffolds, his hands clawing wretchedly at his heavy form, as his insides churned and wave after wave of pure violence washed through him. He found the entrance, gasping with relief and pain, before dropping swiftly into the cave beneath the foundation and falling starkly into the dim blackness of the tunnels below. Writhing on the cold stone ground, he felt it ripping through his back and up the side of his face, his eyes glazing then filling with the fire of a pure primal energy as he arched his head back and let out a tearing sound of unleashed psychic tearing and the breaking of his mind. It had him in its grasp, claws ripping through his hands – its presence overtaking him and unveiling his true SHAPESHIFTER nature.

AKOV follows up his recent initial foray on the label with a solid step into the EATBRAIN fold in the form of the SHAPESHIFTER EP. Comprising 4 tracks of exquisitely dynamic neurofunk and experimental beats that dares to dive between tempos and deliver an entirely fresh take on the genre. From the outset with title track SHAPESHIFTER, a curve ball hits swift, as a straight intro leads into a drop that stretches reality and deviates between spacious reese action and busy percussion, before heavily reglitching itself into a deliciously wonky form. ABRAXAS leads a more epic path with a shimmering, beautiful intro infused with ethnic aesthetics that gives way to an entirely punishing machinegun drop that only pauses to reload and issue a heavy staccato bass cannon. With GAMES WITH GOD featuring THE CLAMPS, the metallic nature of the drums edges up a notch and the vibe leans toward a more sinister but rolling edge. FIRST CONTACT turns the tempo way down to 128 but elevates the attitude to a new level, delivering a chugging and brutish stepper of a tune that carries its neuro core effectively to the vein.

The range of ideas within the Shapeshifter EP serves as a technical breath of fresh air to a genre that’s build on the concept of progression and experimentation. Akov delivers the manifesto of an artist intent on pushing the sound further, delivered on a label at the forefront of futuristic d&b.

Kosen Productions is slowly becoming one of the most defining independent drum & bass labels of 2017. They’ve proven with each of their consecutive releases that they’re able to stand up against more longstanding imprints, providing a fresh selection of talent between every single output. And with the inclusion of Kutlo, a Slovakian born producer who’s beginning his antiquated path to success, they’ve demonstrated that yet again there’s longevity within their reign.

Having already released on the likes of NeurofunkGrid, Renegade Hardware and Let it Roll, Kutlo’s addition to Kosen Production’s back catalogue of meticulously chiselled music comes as no surprise. He’s already toured extensively throughout the European scene, from his home country to the Czech Republic, seeding his music to audiences worldwide which is why fans both new and old will be eagerly awaiting his forthcoming EP on Kosen. Between its ticking, atmospheric introduction, to the guttural undertows of ‘Wasp Nest’, Kutlo ensures that the full EP drags you into his heavyweight production standard and leaves you there to drown.

Beginning the collection of records is ‘Memento’. It sets a precedent, one built through snipping hi-hats and a gradual punch line of intimidating beat patterns. Instantly you know the direction which ‘Memento’ is about throw you into, with a flipped bassline and ominous vocal snippets. Then ‘Exotherm’ dives you head first through elevating pitches of synth and crackling percussive undertows. Your aural nerves are pushed through each steppy drum rhythm before once more you’re made acutely aware of the drop that’s about to envelop you. ‘Out of Place’ clicks into gear with a tell-tale, grimy vocal sifting through its intro and a mix which gradually pulls itself together. Each lyrical melody draws you in deeper, before you’re moved into a steppy gait. And finishing the EP is ‘Wasp Nest’, a track which crackles with an LFO bassline, nodding to its namesake, and cuts deeper with every quickening layer of metallics. Kutlo leaves a lasting impression with ‘Wasp Nest’ and it’s the perfect way to wrap up an intimidating furore into the producer’s world. Kosen show that as ever, their selections are gold-standard, epitomised by each intimidating delivery Kutlo serves up.

The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing. 
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101 Records.
