It’s been nearly seven years since his previous solo album, but El Gant is back with a banger of a new single, “Chromed Out,” featuring frequent collaborators Ras Kass and Planet Asia, over J57’s hard-hitting production with cuts supplied by DJ Jon Doe. 

To be fair, Gant hasn’t been completely quiet since 2014’s 'Beast Academy' LP. For one, he’s one third of the Jamo Gang with Ras and J57, and they’ve dropped a number of acclaimed projects (peep 2020’s Walking With Lions). But with the release of “Chromed Out,” the NYC rap vet is back on his solo tip to get the world ready for his forthcoming new album, 'O.S.L.O.,' which is set to feature Killah Priest, Bobby J From Rockaway, King Magnetic, and more, as well as production supplied by the legendary DJ Premier and Marco Polo, among others. 

Gant is fired up on this track, spitting equally ferocious and witty bars, like “I’m on a mission/ Half the caucasian rappers I came up in the game with done changed into Peter Griffin.” His two guests, Ras and Planet Asia, are on fire, too, with mean-mugging rhymes that complement J57’s head-nodding and raw instrumental.

If you've been listening to Hip-Hop for a while now, you'll come across some common tropes. Beyond the fashion trends and throwback rhymes, is seems like some of the best acts in the genre rely on the dynamic between deejay and emcee. From DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Eric B. and Rakim, Gang Starr and of course, Rahzel & DJ JS-1, these duos have forged a bond that makes the music that much better, but yet they also understand the roles that they each provide. While we often hear of the rapper's exploits, it's a breath of fresh air to hear some rhymes that give the man behind the wheels some credit. For the neck snapping collision of horns and drum work found on "Sample Abusers," you can expect some fire from DJ JS-1, a man who's got the gusto to open up the beat to a hilarious sample from Season 6, of Curb Your Enthusiasm. With a trio of verbal assassins -- AG, Sadat X and Neek the Exotic, who all take us on a trip down memory lane on their experiences with some of their favorite producers, the track comes across as a genuine anthem for those cats who are scheming for that big break. If you’re flipping a classic rap sample for a new track, you damn well better do it justice. Well, that’s exactly what we’re getting here on “Panoramic,” the menacing new single from NY duo Dirt Disciples that’ll inspire thoughts about a certain Hip-Hop chef. You have to hand it to one half of this gritty rap tag team, DJ Concept. The Long Island rep provides the listener with a taste of nostalgia while injecting a brooding sensibility via a snarling bassline.

His rhyming collaborator is no slouch either, as Elmira, NY’s Rome Clientel bodies his competition with dead-eyed, no-bullshit bars. And you have to love this callback to pro wrestling’s glory days: “The Tito Santana of rap/ Hop the top turnbuckle, wave my arms, drop kick to the back/ Motherf*ckers.” The New York connection only grows stronger with a guest verse from Coney Island native, Torae. He closes out the track in high fashion, gritting his teeth and spitting bars reminiscent of Jay Z classic, “So Ghetto.”

Dirt Disciples’ The Ambition EP impacts October 9th via Soulspazm. In addition to Torae, the project boasts collaborators such as actor/gifted rapper Rick Gonzalez (Coach Carter) and Sacramento indie rap prince, Chuuwee.
