‘And where should we go’ — live-recorded album by Homeless dog, the psychedelic electro-acoustic duo consisting of a screech of saxophone and electric guitar, vocals, synthesizers and ethnic instruments, in which Vladimir Sidorov and Ilya Sheyman study various forms of absurdity and chaos, scream and freeze, uprooting everything that is dug into the depths of thoughts and feelings. 

The musicians of the duo speak about the album as follows: 

“The war has come, which we did not want, were afraid of, which we are fighting against and which we hate. Up to this day, it keeps us awake at night, haunts us on the way to school or work, guards nearby grocery stores and on the subway, seeps into people's faces and rots, infecting their internal organs. Others lose their homes and loved ones, migrating all over the world in search of space and safety and do not know where to go. 

We don't know where we should go either. This live recording is our hour-long story about the feeling of being lost and empty, when there is nothing you can grab onto and everything disappears: the former world that you loved and tried to protect, but could not save, because there are people vaster than you and more terrible” 

The release is already available on digital platforms, a little later in audio cassette format.

"И куда нам деваться" — live-альбом Бродячей собаки, психоделического электроакустического дуэта в составе скрежета саксофона и электрической гитары, вокала, синтезаторов и этнических инструментов. Участники проекта Владимир Сидоров и Илья Шейман изучают различные формы абсурда и хаоса, кричат и замирают, выкорчёвывают всё, что врыто в глубину мыслей и чувств. 

Авторы рассказывают о содержимом альбома так: 

“Наступила война, которую мы не хотели, боялись, против которой мы боремся и которую ненавидим. Она по сей день не даёт нам спать по ночам, преследует нас по пути на учёбу и работу, караулит у продуктовых магазинов и в метро, просачивается в лица людей и гниёт, заражая их внутренние органы. Другие теряют дома и близких, разлетаются по миру в поисках воздуха и безопасности и не знают куда им деться. 

Мы тоже не знаем куда нам деться. Этот лайв — наш часовой рассказ об ощущении потерянности и пустоты, когда не за что хвататься и все пропадает: тот прежний мир, который ты любил и оберегал, но не смог сохранить, потому что есть люди выше и страшнее”. 

Альбом складывался весной и летом 2022-го года, был записан живьём для TESTFM в сентябре.

Как и подобает селекторским миксам, внутри нас ждёт много неочевидных поворотов, которые переплетаются между собой тоненькой нитью повествования, напоминая блуждание по дымным клубным коридорам, где из соседних залов то и дело доносятся звуки тихих призраков уходящей ночи. Придет утро, и от них не останется и следа.

What is the sound of the Russian dub? There is a storied history of attempts to adapt roots music to Russian soil, but most of them can be attributed to reggae (the so-called ‘northern’ variety) rather than dub. Gost has a history with the town of Smolensk. It’s home to Gamayun, whose great album Filterealism was released on our label last year. Now Anton, one of Gamayun’s members, presents his new duo Dubovaya Kolesnitsa (The Oaken Chariot). In his words, it has no connection to his other band at all and is an attempt to go back to the roots of a genre that doesn’t truly exist.

The Russian word for oak, ‘dub,’ looks exactly like the genre, and the chariot emerged from the name for the group’s jams – ‘telega’ – which can be translated as a cart. All the music here is the result of live improvisations: no samples, just instruments (notably Vasiliy Shilov's bass). These recordings have been slightly edited, and even the almost indecipherable texts are freestyle. There’s no place for real riddims in Russian dub: sometimes this record sounds like something akin to dub variations on underground Russian hip hop (and we mean that in the best possible way).

We should also remember that dub and reggae (and hip hop as well) all started as the voice of people. The voice of those who are always in the minority and try not to be silent. The most prominent dub producers and reggae performers were against hierarchy, imperialism, and colonialism — and their music was born out of the desire to protest against it. As Anton puts it, Oaken Chariot, the “Russian mutation of dub,” is an attempt of voicing the concern. And he links this attempt to a historic Russian tradition of Foolishness for Christ, also known as yurodstvo. The “fool” in question is not naïve at all; he’s trying to seem lunatic on purpose. For Anton, the music of Oaken Chariot is a rebellion with a cut-off tongue. Here, illegible speech, full of inarticulate sounds, is a sign of the inability of the statement. But this inability represents a statement itself that is inevitable.

Yet, the music of Oaken Chariot is genuinely fun, free, and mesmerizing (like the happenings of holy “fools”), but we could also approach it more conceptually. Theoretician Michael E. Veal describes dub as a ‘postsong’, taking the form of “linguistic, formal and symbolic indeterminacy.” The duo’s faintly eerie compositions call back to the notion of musical hauntology. There is an attempt, without any direct references, to reconstruct the feeling of something that was never there at all. A little nostalgic and very forward-thinking at the same time, the music of Oaken Chariot is best described in its own words. In the opening track, a voice can be heard saying “eto delo v lob,” which means something like “it’s a straight-on thing.” This is very direct, almost in the vein of folk music. This is a great – and, it must be said, successful – experiment in searching for the soul of Russian dub. Simple as that.

Boris Deart (real name Boris Monastiryov) was a soviet composer active in the 80s and 90s who described his own works as “romantic spacesynth”. After spending his early career years in the role of session musician, Boris switched to solo works, composing his own original music, as well as recording sounds and producing tracks for other artists and collectives. His most popular composition 'Ecology' featured at the soviet TV. After releasing several solo albums he started having financial difficulties resulting in a loss of his production studio in 1997. His family broke up when he started drinking heavily, while working as a taxi driver. In December 2005, aged 39, he was found dead in his Moscow apartment. With the help of Boris Deart’s brother and local enthusiasts we have found unreleased music of this unrecognised and underrated composer, which I am happy to share in a form of this mixtape.

For our first mix of the year we invited Alexander "Savier" Khmelevsky aka Burago — Moscow based artist, musician, and founder of NII, one of Moscow’s most interesting and phenomenal venues ever existed. First released extremely rare LP “Buma” in 2013 and then appeared on Johns’ Kingdom with “Kabardian” tape, Savier then kept a 5 year silence. In 2019 he was back on the track with a great 12” on Japanese St.GIGA boutique imprint and now he just released “TAEGEUK” EP on Helpful Music.
In this mix he mostly selected ambient productions which represent the world of Burago in a very accurate and deep way.
