My Song 3

Made this edit before playing at Avant Gardner in Brooklyn. 

The "Coolie Dance Riddim" is a dancehall rhythm produced in 2003 by Cordel Burrell - blending Sufi Punjabi Qawwali music elements, with dancehall. This riddim has reached mainstream success, and has been sampled by prominent artists such as Pitbull, Mr. Vegas, and Nina Sky. 

The original vocal sample used was recorded in 1996-1997 in India from a sample pack called Zero-G. They were sung by Swarn Noora, the grandmother of the famous Nooran Sisters, and her husband Sohan Lal. They are singing a Punjabi Qawwali “Kulli Vichon Ni Yaar Lab Le”, roughly translating to “find your beloved from within”.

“Nachna Onda Nei" by Tigerstyle, featuring Kaka Bhaniawala, fuses Punjabi Bhangra and hip-hop. The title translates roughly to “we can’t stop dancing” describing a man who can’t dance, but wants to dance with his beloved.

It is important to note that "Coolie" is a derogatory term referring to East Indian indentured laborers brought to Caribbean & African colonies during British colonial rule. 

I’m fascinated by how our cultures are so intertwined — we are truly more alike than different.
