We would like to think we have served up plenty of special treats in our podcast series so far, but this latest one is certainly one that many people will get very excited about. It is not often that Detroit key-figures step out and offer us a window into their current musical world, but that is what we have here from Sherard Ingram aka DJ Stingray. Famed for many reasons—not least for always DJing in a black balaclava—he is founder of the Urban Tribe super group with KDJ, C2 and Shake, was DJ for the legendary electro outfit Drexcyia and is also a fierce DJ and producer in his own right. He came up playing tough techno and electro in hardcore motorcycle clubs in the D, but is now a regular in the world’s finest underground spaces, where he pushes a dark, intense sound that is socially and politically charged. Shades of Miami bass and ghetto tech also characterise his work on labels like Shipwreck, Bleep43, [NakedLunch] and Unknown to the Unknown, and in 2016 he is as busy and prolific as he has ever been. This summer he plays a rather exclusive back to back set with Helena Hauff at our festival in Amsterdam. 

The mix he serves up is a great snapshot of what Stingray does - forces you to dance to his high tempo, high impact sounds. He mixes them quickly and slickly and there is a real sense of urban paranoia and future menace in every tune he reaches for. Sit back, then, and bask in the glory of a real master.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (1st April) We welcome Mosca to Solid Steel this week, a DJ and producer who has released on Numbers, Night Slugs, 3024, Hypercolour and his own label Not So Much which will release his 'Cedar Wood State' track soon , plus remixes for the likes of Four Tet, T Williams and Trus'me. Solid Steel in association with Serato (1st April) We welcome Mosca to Solid Steel this week, a DJ and producer who has released on Numbers, Night Slugs, 3024, Hypercolour and his own label Not So Much which will release his 'Cedar Wood State' track soon , plus remixes for the likes of Four Tet, T Williams and Trus'me. Pausing from his monthly show on NTS, he delivered a mix packed with exclusives and told us;
"I still remember when a producer first sent me some unreleased tunes. I was still starting out as a DJ, I'd put on some club nights in a couple of cities, I was doing pirate sessions - early days. The feeling of those dubs was amazing, it felt like I was on a new level of this game. Nowadays, I get sent hundreds of promos and unfortunately it feels more of a chore sifting through them all than the pleasure it once was.
But hitting up some of my favourite producers recently for this mix, I got the feeling back. Mainly because most of the stuff I got sent was so good... I've only managed to squeeze some of it in, so sorry if you sent me stuff and it didn't fit. There's stuff in here that will never see the light of day, some demos and works-in-progress, lots of forthcoming bits too, a few new releases like THAT John Swing record, the new Blawan, new Keita Sano etc, plus a couple of old ones, like the 2/5 BZ track which I nicked from a Gantz mix (although now I think about it I can remember my man John Peel playing him). The Burro was probably a mistake to include because it's pretty much unmixable, but it's so rowdy I thought eff it, I just needed a few goes mixing it.
Geek notes: Burro Banton is riding the Diseases Riddim by Henry 'Junjo' Lawes. The Grace track is a side project of Vereker, and it was previously released on cassette on Ascetic House. Konstruktivits is meant to be spelt like that. There's some new Randomer in there. There's some new DJ Qu in there. There's some new Metrist in there. There's some new Ploy in there. Thanks for listening/reading."

This contribution, which is a live hardware jam session, is a perfect representation of that; layers of synths, drum machines, and whacky analogue sounds that make this a unique and special mix. EMBMX049 // CROFT

The Canadian techno scene would sound very different without the work of Adam Marshall and Christian Anderson. The former runs the essential New Kanada imprint and the latter is one of the most regular artists on it. As well as that, the Berlin based pair work together as Graze, and on November 8th will put out their first EP on our own UFO label. It is a varied four tracker that showcases their futuristic, drum driven style, and is another fine entry into their discography which already takes in six EPs and two LPs in the last three years. 

Ahead of that EP comes the latest entry in our mix series. It is a to-the-point, forty minute selection that is always driven by tightly programmed drums. Forceful percussion, spaced out electronics and big warehouse techno all get called upon along the way, and the result is a sweat inducing, beautifully dark and machine made set that ends on some dystopian ambient and white noise that all fits in perfectly with the vibe of the UFO label and associated stage at Dekmantel Festival.

On the menu we have a portion of rolling techno goodness laced with pounding basslines and marinated in deep atmospherics for maximum flavour. I think a lot of people are (still) confused about what I do. And to be fair, I know I don't make it easy... I know mixing Errorsmith into dancehall doesn't seem like it should work on paper, but there's a thread running through this mix which makes sense, to me at least. Just look at tracklists from Objekt or Ben UFO, or even John Peel...

So yes it's all in there - free jazz sax solos, pitch black FWD @ Plastic People type sounds, polyrhythmic Nonplace type stuff, bleepy ghetto techno, no wave, bashment, a Joy Division homage, African tribal styles, early UK hardcore, Reese bass, Villalobos, dready dubby slow house, ambient stuff - but please don't watch the genres too much. It would be really nice instead if you could just hear - like I do - off kilter, slightly freaky, grown up human party music with a dark soul and a clean heart.

Also, I'm really happy to be able to run a new remix from me which I've been sitting on for a while - a version of Bruce's Post Rave Wrestle which is coming out on Timedance soon with a few other remixes which have blown me away... I'm in seriously good company on this one. There's also my remix of the very talented Yaleesa Hall and Malin on the always on point Will & Ink label - I've been running their records from 001 so it feels wicked to be a small part of that family now. That's out now with amazing versions from Chevel and Asusu as well. Anyway, hope you enjoy the mix!

This week we turn to another close Dekmantel family member in Matrixxman. In just a couple of years the American has emerged as one of the foremost producers in the house and techno world. His rugged analogue sounds have come thick and fast over nearly 20 EPs and are famous for their balance of quality, invention and diversity. Never sticking to the same sound for long, his Sector series on our label proved that, roaming as it does from repetitive peak time techno futurism to mind melting acid and back again. Always focussed squarely on the dance floor, that carries over into his always body jerking sets, many of which have been at Dekmantel events and festivals around the world. 

Over the course of an hour here, the artist goes deep into a streamlined, intergalactic techno soundworld. Supple synths are layered up over pressurised and rubbery drums, manic melodies circle the grooves and there is a sense of darkness to the whole thing that is truly compelling. As energy levels ramp up throughout, you can’t help but go hard right until the blissed out ambient end game.
