Rounding up a year which saw crucial releases from Iron Curtis and Quarion, »Can’t Help It« is the long awaited return of sample wizards Session Victim to the ep format. This Retreat 3-tracker is a profound, subtle and quite melancholic affair, perfect for those emotional moments in the early morning. Skillfully arranged and featuring the impeccable playing of Linnart Ebel, »Can’t Help It« is once again an essential statement from one of House Music’s most fascinating duo.
»Pass The Diesel« begins with a stuttering beat, seagull like noises and muted chords that wouldn’t be out of place on a vintage Group Home instrumental. Staying on the aquatic tip, Session Victim introduce a beautiful Rhodes sequence which takes the track into a dream-like – dare we say californian? – direction. Spiced up with gentle synth noodlings, ethereal vocal snippets and a magical strings motive, »Pass The Diesel« bathes in the deeper shades of House without ever drowning in a cliché, thanks to its snapping drums and vivid arrangement.
Slowing things down a notch, »Hyuwee« starts off with what is maybe the most unconventional instrument in Session Victim’s repertoire, the banjo! But the fear of witnessing these down-to-earth-boys actually becoming the boys-down-south vanishes after 30 seconds: a melancholic 3-Chord theme, snappy 808 patterns and funky drum fills lead the tune in a familiar (but vast) territory. Linnart Ebel’s talent is put to great use with subtle guitar licks that give a lively feel to the whole song. You will notice that Session Victim have labeled »Hyuwee« as an »instrumental«. Does it mean that we can expect a vocal version in the near future? All bets are on as to who will provide the vocals to this one …
Flip the record over for the magnificent »Tearwiper«, a slow-house groover which might be Session Victim’s deepest excursion on wax so far. Abyssal chords, radio effects and a dragging 105 bpm beat set the stage for a grand sonic adventure. The track breaks down after the introduction of the guitar theme and a warm sub bass takes center stage in order to drive »Tearwiper« in a confident manner. Shakers and bubbling synths are floating around whereas Linnart’s hypnotic playing provides a steady backing to the bassline. Another breakdown and the elements are nicely washed away while a thoughtful guitar solo brings this underwater journey to an end.

It’s with great pride (and a certain sense of defiance!) that Tom and I present
you with the 200th Freerange release. Despite the best efforts of three bankrupt
distributors, an arsonist (who set the Sony warehouse ablaze back in 2012) and a
volatile market, we retained the fire in our bellies, a stiff upper lip, and most
importantly an unrelenting passion for electronic music, we soldiered on and here
we are at Freerange 200!

To mark the occasion we wanted to put together a compilation of exclusive new
tracks from both long-standing Freerange regulars as well as some fresh artists
to the label whose music we’ve been loving. Being committed to vinyl we figured
the best way would be to do a two part release with four-tracks on each part.
Kicking things off we have my first original Jimpster track since Porchlight And
Rocking Chairs. Head Spin is a relentlessly chugging house track which puts
equal parts Disco, early House, Afro and Techno through the blender and out comes
a peaktime floor pleaser with a spring in its step and a lovely driving energy.
I’m really proud of this one and hope you love it too!

Next up we have Matt Masters teaming up with Pippo Ceretti on Xenophilia. We’re
like a couple of proud parents seeing how Matt has come on with his productions
and this brilliant slice of freaky, stripped back electronic house shows he’s
heading for big things.

Flip over for a very special track from Andy Hart, one of the Melbourne-based
producers helping to re-invent and reinvigorate the current house scene alongside
the likes of Harvey Sutherland, Fantastic Man and Andras Fox. Not only has Andy
managed to establish one of the most hotly tipped new labels (Voyage Recordings)
in the space of just two release, but he’s also been rocking it with his
productions on labels such as Heist and Sleazy Beats Black Ops and we’re very
happy to welcome him to Freerange with this sun-drenched slice of gorgeousness
called MYLNY.

Closing the first part we have long-standing Freerange regular Shur-i-kan
stepping up with his track Raindance and if your tastes edge towards the jazzier,
fusion end of House then you’ll be all over this one. Classic Shur-i-kan and
sounding lush as ever!

These two songs explore the gap between electronic synthesis and organic percussion. Using a harp, a 1980s Russian analog synthesizer, and hand-drums recorded in the subway systems of New York, bad tuner hoped to combine human nature (imperfection) and electronic music programming (repetition). The double speaks to bad tuner's childhood, with themes of escape and alienation.
