I've always shied away from doing generic lo-fi, as it can become repetitive, both for the listener and the producer, but I still wanted to see if I could pull it off. So consider this more of an exercise in adhering to the template than anything with artistic integrity.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

For this track I had a friend challenge me out of the blue to write a beat with very specific criteria-

Traditional Japanese woodwind intro:
 I went with some pretty dope shakuhachi flute loops from a traditional piece.

'Some sax in the mid':
To find something played on saxophone in a similar minor key to suite the flute sample I had to revert to old faithful Ethiopian Jazz records.

'Drum-centric, but not overboard, fade-out:
I sampled traditional Japanese taiko drums for the kick and parts of the intro, so it was just a matter of stripping the beat back at the end.

I found this whole exercise both challenging and fulfilling.

Raiden

I haven't made any music in about a week but I'm determined not to force it. I could pump out cookie-cutter lofi jazz beats all day everyday but it's not very satisfying on my end. No disrespect to the lofi producers out there, but I'd rather wait for something to come to me and keep the integrity in the art.

I challenged myself to make a fat beat in under 2 hours, here's what I ended up with. I maybe could have dragged it out a bit longer but decided to keep it short and sweet.
