'Songs of Olde vol. 1’ from Gipsy Moon 2017, is an album of old-world traditional songs, ranging from Russian folk tunes, to American murder ballads, from Middle Eastern love songs, to irish Instrumentals. This album takes a journey through ancient songs of the past and relives them in mondern times.

Clementine- Clementine is an American traditional folk ballad usually credited to Percy Montrose (1884.) but has been apart of American folk music and culture before then. It is a ballad about a lover loosing his darling during the California gold rush. 

Caravan- Caravan, a jazz standard composed by Juan Tizol and Duke Ellington, was first performed by Ellington in 1936. Irving Mills wrote the lyrics.The first version of the song was recorded in Hollywood in 1936, as an instrumental by Barney Bigard and his Jazzopaters. 

Dark Eyes- a Russian romance song with lyrics written by Ukrainian poet Yevhen Hrebinka, first published in 1843. It is known as a gypsy romance cabaret song based on the origional melody of Florian Hermann's Valse Hommage. The most renowned and played version of this song was written by Adalgiso Ferraris, and published, in Russia, in 1910.

Banish Misfortune- Banish Misfortune is said to have first been published in the book “Ancient Irish Music” by P.W. Joyce under the title ‘The Bag of Meal” in 1873. The song is also said to have played an apotropaic role in Irish culture, supposedly having the power to avert bad luck or evil intentions, and was played when misfortune struck. 

Misrilou- is a traditional song from the Eastern Mediterranean region, and the earliest known recording of the song is from 1927. There are also traditional Arabic, Jewish klezmer, Armenian, Persian and Turkish versions of the song. It gained worldwide popularity through Dick Dale's 1962 American surf rock version, originally titled “Miserlou".

St. Jane’s - The song St. Jane’s was crafted from the tune St. Anne’s Reel, a tune who’s birthplace is still debated today. Some claim it is an old Irish Reel, some a contradance tune, others claim that it is an American old-time tune, and some even say that it dates back to the Renaissance. There is also a claim that the tune was named after a Miracle-worker St. Anne the Mother of Mary. We’ve recorded it in a minor key and added lyrics.

Uskadara-  or Kâtibim, is a Turkish folk song about a woman and her servant traveling to Üsküdar, a large district of Istambul, Turkey. The tune is a famous Istanbul türkü. Many versions of the song can be found in countries neighboring Turkey, usually with entirely different lyrics. The song was made famous in the US in 1953  by Eartha Kitt, also recorded by Eydie Gormé.

Gary Owen- Gary Owen is an old Irish quick-step that can be traced back to the early 1860’s known for its popularity during the Civil War. The origional tune is a jig in 6/8 while we have chosen to play it in common time.

Que Sera Sera- first published in 1956, is a popular song written by Jay Livingston and Ray Evans. The song was introduced in the Alfred Hitchcock film The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), starring Doris Day and James Stewart in the lead roles. The orgion of the saying is unknown but attributed to both Spanish and Italian histories.
