Francesca Macri also known by her now well known moniker System Olympia has been stretching the genres of new-wave, disco and club sounds to her whim since the mid 2010's. With her 2020 debut album "Delta Of Venus" still in huge demand sitting on discogs for a keen collectors price it only speaks volumes about Macri's fan base. Having followed up her successful debut with the synth driven "Racing Heart" and the stunning "Always On Time" in more recent years, not to forget most recently her critically acclaimed new EP "Sanctified"; System Olympia has won fans over with her unique ear and keen eye to her sound, each time bringing something new to the table. As well as performing live shows, the artist also enjoys taking punters on journeys in her diverse DJ sets and this is where we move on to the mix. An hour of leftfield disco, rare boogie gems and synthy anthems all mixed to perfection. Pop that bottle of champagne, cue up the system and shine your phone light at the disco ball in your room. We've been searching for a proper way to post all this stuff from 5 Mag's 18 years of history that slipped through the cracks. This series, SYNC, is our way to revisit that history in a respectful way and not just dump a bunch of content back on the internet without context. We could think of  no better way to start than with this lost mix from the great Paul Johnson.

There was never a time that we asked Paul Johnson for a favor and he turned us away. You could hit him up at 5am for a mix, an interview, a booking, a DJ chart, a free track or to sit for several hours for a video interview, as he did for our 5 year anniversary project. He was usually still up, and he almost always complied. He wasn't just a brilliant artist &mdash; maybe the best house music DJ and creator that Chicago ever produced. The guy gave of himself and his time like no one else. 

This was not an original 5 Mag mix. Paul used to post mixes to SoundCloud almost weekly and delete them when they reached 100 downloads. This one he called "Jive Turkey," and it was posted just prior to Thanksgiving weekend in 2012. We embedded this mix for a shortlived feature called "ChicagoCast," highlighting new mixes from figures in the Chicago house scene. Paul later deleted it, and when I asked about it he sent it over for us to repost. It seems to have fallen completely off the map since then; according to Google it's not available anywhere and this might be the only copy, or at least the only one we could find.

Excited to share the recording of a 3hr set live from Waking Life festival in Portugal from earlier this summer. This set is one of my favorites of the year, full of ‘Mister’ anthems for a fresh audience and 2024 favorites that have been working a treat on home soil at Nowadays

Truth be told I hadn’t heard too much about the festival before receiving the invite to come play and so travelled to Portugal with an open mind and a managed expectation. What I experienced was one of the most fulfilling festival experiences I’ve ever had as a DJ or punter. There was joy, freedom, mischief and a sense of acceptance in the air which I quickly felt and rode as best I could for the next 3 hours. 

Major props to the folks working hard to produce and preserve a truly special vibe in a truly magical location.
