He began his career in 2011. Taking inspiration from the natural surroundings in the suburbs where he grew up, his early music’s major themes were the city and nature. However, his later music tends towards the impersonal, allowing each listener to fit the sounds into the spaces of his or her life, attempting to link the ideas of memory and recollection into his music.

James Heather is a pianist, composer, and publicist for Ninja Tune that has appeared on these pages on numerous occasions. James and I have a mutual passion for sharing the music that we discover. A few years ago, he’s made an ambient focused Headphone Commute Mix for this very same podcast. Today I’m syndicating his selection originally appearing on his very own Moving Sounds program that he runs on London’s Soho Radio. This monthly show “was born out of the long-running playlist of the same name created by James that explores spaces between classical, electronic, ambient, soul, jazz, drone, film soundtrack, folk, field recordings & other transporting sounds from the past but mostly from now.” This particular mix is featuring many of my favourite composers whom I am honoured to call friends, and I was even happy to contribute a track of my own. In the case of mixes, I always follow the “less words – more music” formula, so here you go, folks!

Longtime friends and frequent collaborators Luke Entelis (Viul) and Thomas Meluch (Benoît Pioulard) combine their enchanting textures reflecting on a time spent in lockdown, for A Strangely Isolated Place.

"Konec" is Czech for "end," and a nod to the uncertainty of Luke and Thomas’ home city of New York amidst the pandemic. Birthed from Luke’s short synth sketches, the two friends further collaborated in isolation to create a series of strangely beautiful interludes - a sense of vitality breaking through the immediate surrounding dread.

Whilst many of the tracks expand far beyond what a short interlude may dictate, Konec builds on this concept through some of the most thought-provoking loops the pair have created over their many combined years producing.

With an immediate arresting aesthetic, grounded in saturation, decay and distortion, tracks such as ‘Returning Clear Voice’ or ‘Flaxen’ reflect some of the duo’s more textured work - a hazy mist of life unknown in a city’s uncharted times. Konec’s storyful and engrossing moments come with a confident posture, such as the unforgettable bellowing of ‘Catalune’ or ‘Construction Worker Smoke Cycle’ or the swirling, haunting ‘Canon’.

The variation in minutia, samples and instrumentation throughout the album cannot be understated amongst its hazy aesthetic and ominous poignancy. It’s one thing to notice the details, but another to unstick the melodies from the closing credits of a dystopian city’s downfall, from the forefront of your mind.

Soft Generator - We Found It (taken from On a Map of Sound)

Existentially, this mix is a meditation on mortality, a fear of death (own and dear ones) and simultaneously a latent desire to shortcut the earthly path. A kind of aural Maranasati, just prettier and less scary, or a reading from Seneca’s letters, but non-verbal and less moralizing. Kicking off with the sound of clay burial urns captured by Simon Whetham, it is centered around Sufjan Stevens’ lament to his late mother, which opens the gates of an "afterlife" that begins with a narrative from a Russian animation about seeing ﻿[﻿signs and﻿]﻿ wonders in mundanity and finding a waltz pattern in flashing street lights, followed by a limbo of Melanie De Biasio’s consolation to her own mother, and rounded off by a succession of heavenly piano music dissolving in the sounds of Latvian nature.

We are all fireflies, waltzing our way between two eternities. Do you know how to waltz?

Welcome to Episode 126 on Poisonoise Music with this one featuring the talents of German based DJ and Producer Elias Epp aka Seramind.
Elias is yet another artist that I have been a long time admirer of,  so I am very happy to have him featured in my guest series!       I remember listening to his amazing track “Feanor” back in 2016 and ever since then I have kept an eye and ear out for his music.

Seramind is Elias Epp's music project, he is a musician and software engineer from Ulm, Germany.

Born 1989 in a sovkhoz in Kazakhstan and raised in southern parts of Germany.

Most of his stuff is Dub Techno / Ambient Techno or just pure Ambient.

Working mostly with FL Studio and Audacity.

Lots of obfuscation via stretching, cuts and effects.

Got into Techno music around 1999 with early Euro Dance and Trance, later more Dutch oriented Trance music and Ambient, later more Progressive House, experimenting alongside with FL Studio and a minimal repertoire of synths and sounds, nothing too serious.

After discovering Dub Techno and Ambient Techno started a more serious approach of producing.
