“I liked the unusual side of the water – the bench set back
from the path looked up to windows rather than down
onto ploughed width. From here, I saw trees assert
their permanence, bending over backwards to prove
they still had it. Branches poked at homes then dashed –
I was the lookout, or friend who misread herself included,
just one hand in the mischief. What a salve it was
to pair a song with the moment and watch, feast and flee,
drink all the good stuff that view had going free then leave.
I did it once when a phone call felled me, or on days that
didn’t suit me, once again when I let a chance sail past
like a bus I should have run for. We had an understanding,
I thought. If I recognised how my body eased in this beauty,

Theory Therapy (@theory-therapy) is a Sydney-based mix series and radio show turned label. Run by Gary Hunter and Daniel Patrin, its debut release – a charity compilation called 'Out of Season' – is out August 6th. It's a 13-track collection of immersive ambient and downtempo recordings inspired by place, environment and the passing seasons, featuring Gi Gi, Slowfoam, Babyxxan and more. 100% of the proceeds from the compilation will go to headspace, a national youth mental health foundation that provides early intervention mental health services to 12 to 25-year-olds.

The mix features some tracks from the compilation as well as a spoken word poem by Edinburgh poet Ellen Renton.

Inspired by a recent drive around LA ~ a collage of neon advertisements shielded by sun-bleached billboards, where manicured lawns frame suburban monotony. Frivolity and despair collapse into one another, revealing the protracted grim realities of profit over people, while a hot sunset and hot bodies bounce off iridescent post-human monoliths.

Slowfoam is the sound project of multidisciplinary artist Madelyn Byrd, whose work is influenced by our impact on nature, surreal utopian abstractions, and beauty in the palpable mundane.

An unsettling and cathartic musical road trip where at all times our hands are firmly kept on the steering wheel. Meanwhile, some glimmering flashes of beauty are being reflected, with joy and determination, through the car's window making the journey more pleasant.

Jacob Long has been crafting Earthen Sea material since the early 2000s. He gradually graduated from limited-edition cassettes to releases on Ital's Lover's Rock and Nicolas Jaar's Other People imprints, before linking up with the evergreen label Kranky in 2017. His third album for Kranky, Ghost Poems, comes out next week. We celebrate with an hour of music built as spring emerges around him in Brooklyn, full of contrasts between light and decay.

Ep 291 pt.1 w/ Earthen Sea

Traditionally a real-time improviser, Thorn applies the same method here: live improvisation, spontaneous structure-building, and experimental mélanges of violin and code. Many of its foggy textures derive from Haze, a tool he developed for generating densely patterned lo-fi soundscapes.

A sonic memoir imbued with violin and experimental code, a curious doubling of terms begins at the churning waters of Necarney Creek merging with the Pacific. Unfolding from pure lyricism into machinic textures, the music summons the verdant twilight of the primeval forest and the glow of the city lights it ad-umbrates. The machinic is both refuge and trial in this work, though the final word is the fracturing, hard-driven logic-become-logistics that may signal a morbid dénouement.
