I feel both excited and honored to have Max Essa as my first guest for my Lost In Transition show on Radio AlHara, an incredible artist who has been active as a DJ and producer since the early 90s, initially releasing music on labels such as Warp Records and Paperecordings and DJing alongside the infamous D.i.Y Sound System.

I recall the moment I first listened to his work, a few years ago, which felt like a revelation to me as it followed no rule and surely, couldn't be categorized into one genre.

His productions, which were mainly inspired by natural elements like the sound of waves crashing on the shores, held a very organic touch and a whole package of emotions, going from Joy to Melancholia, which were sometimes present all at once in just one track.

No wonder that his work, for labels like Is It Balearic? Recordings, went on to be playlisted by leg-ends such as Andrew Weatherall and David Mancuso who are best known for their quests of emotionally-engaging and beautifully-weaved grooves. His albums for the Japanese major label, Victor Entertainment (Vacations Never Taken' 2015) and Music For Dreams (Lanterns' 2018), plus EPs for the Italian label, Hell Yeah! Recordings and a constant stream of remixes, have shown him to be a deeply imaginative and prolific producer.

For the past decade Max has held two DJ residencies in Tokyo, Lone Star at the legendary, Bar Bonobo with Ken Hidaka and Dr Rob (Ban Ban Ton Ton) and Fridays at the ever-popular Aoyama Tunnel.

The mix is a condensed version of the kind of things he plays for the first 2-3 hours of the night at his 12 year residency at Aoyama Tunnel in Tokyo
