Today marks the 20th year anniversary of Balance 006 mixed by Anthony Pappa. Needless to say, it’s a chapter which holds a special place in the Balance story. 

In the years between Anthony's breakout year in 2000 and his Balance mix in 2004, the progressive scene underwent many transformations—shifting from more trance-y sounds to tribal house rhythms, and dark atmospheres, eventually incorporating melodic progressive breaks. With Anthony’s trademark harmonic mixing on full display, this compilation skilfully captured the evolving landscape and showcased Anthony’s musical range in impeccable style.

With it’s borderline spiritual take on progressive breaks, it still sounds as fresh as it did 20 years ago. For Anthony, it stands out as a unique entry in his discography:   

‘I had never dedicated a full mix to breaks. That was something special.'

If the first mix is the spiritual and centered friend you'll happily introduce to your parents, CD 2 is the kid your parents warned you about—the one who smoked cigarettes at school. It's a devilishly hard mix to deny, an adventurous ride through some of the dankest tech-prog the 2004 circuit had to offer.

Back then, this was the sound of the clubs. "It was that kind of style, you know, the late-night, after-hours vibe, like Twilo," Anthony recalls. The NY club was renowned worldwide for its pristine sound system and pure clubbing experience. "I had a monthly residency there, and the music on mix 2 featured that same kind of intoxicating, immersive vibe."

Few DJs capture the imagination of prog punters like Australia’s Anthony Pappa. Known for his technical proficiency and ability to mix tracks with surgical precision, he is a generational talent who rightfully became a pivotal scene figure.

With a sound rooted in darker, rebellious tones, he fully embodied the underground at a time when the term still held weight.

Achieving what Pappa did requires a life filled with experiences. Given the way social media, marketing, and promotion have transformed the scene, his story is unlikely to be replicated.
