As 2024 winds to a close Madloch's Sound Avenue welcomes George Alhabel to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from Australia, George Alhabel first emerged in 2020 on the strength of releases for Balkan Connection South America and Electronic Tree. Noted for his nostalgic progressive sound, the Sydney resident was quickly tipped as a new artist to watch going forward. Sound Avenue affiliate 3rd Avenue would also serve as a landing spot in George's first year of production, with an appearance on the label's popular ‘We Are the Future' series. The charming sounds of ‘6:27' proved to be a highlight on the collection, a track which would spearhead subsequent projects for Mango Alley, MNL and One Of A Kind, amongst others; across the next three calendar years. With 2024 being highlighted by ‘Sense of Nonsense', his debut single for long-standing UK imprint Stripped Recordings, George now adds Sound Avenue to his resume with ‘Surface Shift', alongside remixes from Around Us, Gonzalo Sacc and Freedo Mosho.

In 2013 Daniel Bortz released his debut album 'Patchwork Memories', an 11-track selection of deep cuts bleeding with melancholy, black keys and nostalgia. Bortz's laser-precision production skills were in full flight here, and his ability to use very little elements to fill out each track is the work of a serious professional. The album was filled with the sort of low-slung house which could easily double up as a downtempo soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon. Look into his back catalogue you will find that his debut album was no anomaly: his discography is loaded with brooding melodies and infectious rhythms. As you can expect, he follows the same route in the club where Bortz tend to favour the cuts which make you feel as much as dance. Of late, the German has been injecting a darker sound into his DJ sets which might come as a surprise to those who know him for his 'deep house', but Perlon is one of his favourite labels, and that influence is definitely starting to become more relevant in his productions. (This should come as no surprise, the back catalogue of his Pastamusik imprint is loaded with his appreciation for the microhouse/minimal techno label) On the verge of an Australian tour (dates at bottom of article), Bortz has delivered the next Balance Selections podcast. It's safe to say that you are in good hands...

Swedish-born, but Berlin-based, La Fleur has been making waves in the dance world for almost a decade now. La Fleur is one of those individuals who excel at anything they put their mind to and as a result her career is now thriving. Her driving ambition to make music led to her hanging up the lab coat and leave her steady job as a pharmacist in order to pursue making people dance. She has a number of different ventures in motion, which, not only includes being a DJ and producer, but a label owner, fashion designer, radio host and a mixed media artist, all of which are seeing sustained levels of success.

Turning heads globally, La Fleur was recently named the #1 charted artist on Resident Advisor and won the P3 Guild award for ‘Best Electronic Act’. She has seen huge success from all of her releases, in particular 'Hedione' and her 'Flowerhead' EP which just received a 2016 rework and remixes from Cassy and Dana Ruh. As well as pushing out constant original releases, La Fleur has become a regular go-to producer for her remix skills: She’s recently remixed the likes of Andhim, Carl Craig and Ian Pooley, as well as being called upon to put together guest radio mixes for Pete Tong, B. Traits and Heidi. She is currently the resident at Watergate, featured at Panorama Bar and played for Boiler Room twice (most recently along side Richie Hawtin and Dubfire).

Now on the eve of her debut Australian tour which includes a highly anticipated set for Piknic Électronik in Melbourne (https://www.facebook.com/events/1313101602043820/), and with new music on the way in the form of a remix for Francesca Lombardo (to be released on Echoe) alongside a remix for Hot Since 82’s Knee Deep In Sound imprint, she has taken some time out of her busy schedule to deliver an excellent Balance Selections podcast. Balance Selections 033: La Fleur

Those who have been in and around the dance music scene for any given amount of time, have definitely come across the name of Kasey Taylor. Not only did he compile the second Balance Series compilation, but to date, his career resume is an impressive read, ticking off gigs and residencies at almost every big show and club in his native Melbourne, before he moved to Portugal for a ten-year stint which included shows across the globe.  Now in his 32nd year of DJing, Kasey’s career began in earnest in 1996 when he managed to impress John Digweed during a warm-up set leading him to invite Kasey to play at his monthly Bedrock night at Heaven in London.

  For over two decades Kasey has had the luxury of releasing music on his label ‘Vapour Recordings’, which is 150 releases deep. In 2004 Kasey started eVapour8, the first release going on to become number 1 on the Beatport Techno charts for eight weeks and number 1 on the main charts for a month. After taking some personal time away from the scene and a four-year break from running Vapour Recordings, the label has just been rebranded along with a new website which will be relaunched around mid-2019.  

As if he isn’t busy enough, after moving to Australia in 2013 he started a new label Lo-Fi 45, and it is already showing signs of treading the same successful path of his previous imprints. The label has a focus on new and exciting talent, which sees Taylor taking on more of a mentor role too, by signing promising locals like Lask and Peruw, seeing them sit alongside productions from seasoned producers like Jamie Stevens and Kasey himself. Kasey is currently in the studio whipping up lots of new releases for Vapour Recordings and remixes for Lo-Fi-45. Watch out for new material which should be released very soon.  Kasey’s Vapourized podcast will also be back in 2019 with a rebrand and fresh new look.  

At Rainbow Serpent festival this year Kasey was booked to play on the Market Stage to an appreciative crowd of thousands. If you missed the set or would like to relive the moment, sit back and press play, we have the full two-hour recording for your entertainment. It was not only a special set for the many who witnessed it, but it was also a watershed moment for Kasey himself:   

‘My podcast for Balance is my recent set from Rainbow Serpent Festival. It’s been a while since I played on Market Stage and it was awesome of Rainbow Serpent to give me a cracker time to announce my comeback after a break for 2/3 years for personal reasons. I put a lot of love and threw everything at this one and it was a bit different to what people expected I think, in a good way. It was a fantastic afternoon and the reception was incredible and I cant thank everyone enough who was there in support.’

The past decade has seen Öona Dahl solidify her status as one of underground dance music's most refreshing artists. As a producer, she has steadily built her repertoire, with a penchant for experimentation that's guided by an innate understanding of what makes a great song.
