Thursday 15th of April 2016, Ecoutes au vert put up a special Tropical Party at Sameheads in Neukölln, Berlin. We were excited to welcome 3 awesome record collectors/djs from Canada, France and Switzerland, playing their first gig in Berlin. 

PHILIPPE NOEL & LES DIPLOMATES (aka MAMBO CHICK & JEAN TOUSSAINT) indeed brought the heat to Sameheads's low ceiling basement & people grooving in the bar above, playing only original 1950's to 1980's vinyls featuring the best Cumbia, Kompas, Guaracha, Gaitas, Son, Juju, Calypso, Afro-Colombian, Soukous, Afro Jazz, Sudanese music and much more... Killer melodies, heavy bass and irresistible rhythms that brought much love & smiles and got people dancing like crazy. 

This is the 2nd Part of the over 4 hours mix that was actually the 1st ever meeting of these 3 dedicated record collectors and awesome people. Prior to that, they had only exchanged about music and records via the internet. Surely, they will meet again behind the decks...

One of the go-to terms for anything “tropical” nowadays, Zouk is a music genre born in the late 70’s in the French Antillean islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique. Zouk's first iteration was crafted by the band Kassav’ when bandleaders Desvarieux and Décimus longed for a local "Disco-type music”, thus proudly proposing their own homegrown brand of pop. Carved around the foundation of an infectious pattern carried by hi-hat cymbals, Zouk was created as a weapon to elevate the status of frowned-upon Antillean cultural practices. It was a powerful response to the musical and political domination of France and other regions of the Caribbean. Kassav' paved the way for the groundbreaking genre to become both culturally relevant and commercially viable beyond the Antilles, reaching a career high in 1985 with a global hit in which they cheekily claim that Zouk is "the only medicine they need".

Borrowing elements from the neighboring islands - such as Cadence-lypso from Dominica and Compas from Haiti - Zouk’s signature sound was also shaped by the tools from the burgeoning digital age, as musicians and producers embraced the MIDI technology with its promise of fun through loop-programming. On top of the exciting new effects offered by other music-making machines, it opened up a whole new world of experimentation. Many of these eager pioneers jumped head in and didn't shy from manufacturing anvil-sounding snare drums, wacky vocal modulations, epic horns, saturated bass and sexy synths... all of it duly drenched in reverb!

Perceived right away by some stiff necks as low-brow entertainment inducing lewd motions of the hips, Zouk was actually the result of incredibly sophisticated recording technology and visionary talent. Although derided in the distant French “métropole” - with hits from bands such as “La Compagnie Créole” and “Zouk Machine” relegated to camping and carnival DJ playlists - Zouk invaded the African continent within a decade. The familiarity of Zouk’s underlying rhythm spoke to many through the deep and complex web of pre-slavery roots connecting Africa to the Caribbean.

Whereas most white French music snobs disregarded Zouk as a synonym for bad taste and cheesy regionalism - sometimes with the racist tinge of colonial contempt - African listeners loved it for what it was: a kick-ass beat to sweat to, especially while dancing close to a partner. Since the early 80’s, African musicians have been paying homage to the couple-friendly genre, quoting words from the creole lexicon (“Doudou”) and blending in their own territorial twists: be it in francophone (Makossa, Rumba, Soukous) or lusophone countries (Tarraxinha, Kizomba, Coladeira). A lot of Afro Zouk legends actually met, hung out and worked in recording studios and DJ booths of the cosmopolitan city of Paris, which has been acting as the cross-pollinating hub of French-speaking black diasporas since the 70's.

La musique "nourrit le monde" nous assure le Béninois Gnonnas Pedro, mais le monde nourrit-il les musicien.nes ? Face au piratage de masse, au déclin du live et aux miettes du streaming, les musicien.nes africain.es et antillais.es dépendent comme ailleurs des subsides étatiques et des sponsors — marques et mécènes —  pour tirer profit de leurs talents. Et cela avant même une pandémie qui a renvoyé tout le monde chez soi et précarisé davantage les artistes subissant le poids de structures défaillantes.

Si beaucoup ne gagnent pas assez pour subvenir à leurs besoins, ils se regroupent cependant au sein d'une communauté dans laquelle ils trouvent compréhension et inspiration: "Partout où j’ai trouvé musique, partout j’ai trouvé des frères" (Bumba Massa). Ces mêmes frères peuvent toutefois vite devenir des envieux colportant des ragots pour détruire des succès jalousés ("Ils prient pour que tu tombes", Serge Beynaud).

Faisant parfois face à l’incompréhension du cercle familial (la musique, "c’est pour les vauriens", Fitini ; "Tu ne deviendras rien dans la musique", Les Leaders), à l'ingratitude du public, aux harassements des autorités et aux critiques de la presse, leurs vocations résistent aux tempêtes. Pour le grand bien de la société car en effet, "le musicien aussi c’est un grand travailleur" (Bazaré) qui peut jouer un rôle essentiel de fusible ("Il vit la peine de tout le monde", Fati Mariko) et parfois même de "pauvre intellectuel" martyr quand il se fait "emprisonner à ta place" (Fati Mariko). Lorsqu'il parvient à s'exporter à l'étranger, on attend alors de lui qu'il soit "ambassadeur de son pays" (Star Feminine Band).

Cette sélection s'efforce de rapporter les paroles de chanteurs et chanteuses francophones d'Afrique et des Antilles qui parlent de leurs vécus de musicien.nes de façon honnête. Mais alors... "vivent-ils de leur art ?" Arrêtons de leur demander, c'est à nous mélomanes avec nos deniers de nous en assurer !

This mix assembles songs from musicians who sing/speak — mostly in French but also in Guadeloupean creole or lingala — about the many hardships of a musician’s life: Ivoirian Zouglou, Congolese Rumba, Kompa/Kadans from French Antilles. Let’s listen in and skip the usual irritating inquiry: "But do you manage to make a living from your art?" ("Mais alors, vous en vivez ?"), since the answer is clear anyway: probably not, which is why music-lovers have their part to play to ensure they get their fair due.
