Mix of the Week #391: Quinn Lamont Luke

Rare Groove Records (Japan) is a prized and treasured record store situated amongst a mind blowing number of fellow music stores, would you know it, classed into one of the highest record store densities on the globe. In an already declining traditional commerce where brick & mortar stores face sky high rent hikes, it’s becoming increasingly challenging to simply make a living as a music retailer, however, this particular store has withstood the test of time. With some perseverance, a vigorous dedication to hospitality, and intriguing selections, Rare Groove has become part of the record pilgrimage route for vinyl lovers visiting Japan.

Owner and operator of Rare Groove, Norio Sato, has graciously presented us with the next instalment of the series. Having a wealth of knowledge in musical genres from ambient, jazz, city pop, to disco ((Check his recent compilation 4 Music from Memory’s release 'Heisei No Oto')), theres no denying this man has the ability to transcend the listener into higher realms. Who knew Dusty Springfields (Marshall Jefferson) remix could  fuse itself so beautifully onto Morgan Fisher’s ambient masterpiece “Ice Melting”. What a tease! The rest of the mix defines itself beyond limits and boundaries.

Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I'd like to think I'm a music enthusiast who enjoys diving deep into the early "golden" years of dance (and chillout) music.

Q. How long have you been a part of the Melbourne music scene? How did you get involved?
A. I've been playing records around town since about 2006, and started running some parties with a few friends shortly after that, back when electro house and fluro tees were the hottest ticket in town ;) A few years later me and my friend Andy Hart discovered there was this whole other deeper side that we absolutely loved and started the MDC series. Somehow it's still going after all these years!

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. After being locked down for most of this year, I wanted to channel the kind of vibes I would go for if given an opening set outdoors somewhere on a sunny afternoon among friends (hoping this won't be too far away now as things start to open up here!). The mix starts out slow and soulful and gradually picks up the pace with lots of 90s chillers and summery house nostalgia to get you in the mood. Thanks for listening and I hope you enjoy!
