Balkan Connection continues a strong start to the year by welcoming Last95 to the label for his debut single. Since emerging in 2017 Serbian artist Last95 has forged a distinctive sound which focuses on inventive use of melody and groove, drawing the lines between global dance cultures without adhering to any fixed formula. With a strong schedule since his first single ‘Faceless', the Belgrade resident has impressed with a consistent stream of superlative releases via Lowbit, Space Motion Records and Last95 Records, the latter of which has served as his primary home. With 2023 being highlighted by his ‘Retro Narrative' EP, a release written in conjunction with Turkish producer Orkun Bozdemir, Last95 now opens the new year with his much-anticipated Balkan Connection debut ‘Blood'.

Sitting comfortably in cross genre territory, Last95 crafts a modern club cut that is sure to leave lasting memories on the dancefloor. Remarkably powerful, its dynamic groove commands attention, moving through rolling contours and rhythmic pulses, while soulful vocals steal the air, bringing with them a nostalgic soul which creates a cruising energy into the main break. Adding a contemporary flair to the narrative, the interlude melts down to a warm atmospheric glow, eventually revealing a new-found melodic theme, set against a backdrop that is both colourful and emotive, before rising atmospherics summon the groove for a tasteful end of the night style finale.

Fast forward to present day and the Buenos Aires resident has racked up over two hundred discography credits across the two imprints. Meanwhile, Russian artist and Sever Records boss Ewan Rill has been a mainstay of the progressive house underground since first emerging in 2011. Balkan Connection's 'Balkanians Vol. 11' collection served as the vehicle for Ewan's first ever release, and it's safe to say he found a comfortable home on Serbian imprint where he has now racked up an impressive 135 discography credits . Now thirteen years later he stands as one of the genre's most storied artists, with a hefty discography highlighted by projects for esteemed imprints such as Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden. With Balkan Connection celebrating their 800th release it seems only appropriate that the label calls upon two of their most long standing artists in Nicholas and Ewan to collaborate on a special project entitled 'Subliminal'. 

Beginning with the title selection Nicholas and Ewan combine their extensive forces for a groovy slice of progressive house. Full of mystical qualities, the cross-continental duo smoothly blends punchy kick drums and chunky grooves, with brooding synth motifs and clattering percussive arrangements, resulting in a prophetic path into the main break. Looking to bring a greater sense of tension during the interlude, it's a trail of percolating effects and icy pads that blankets loops of fuzzed out percussion, before a slow-burning build smoothly segues into a finale that is equal parts ominous and groovy. 

Selection two 'Animal Ritual' finds Ewan operating in solo capacity and maintaining the deep brooding qualities of its predecessor. Mysterious and trippy throughout, its chunky cadence instantly commands your attention, through snatches of flashing percussion, orbiting effects and phasing atmospherics. Metallic synth mutations provide a bridge into the main break, adding further depth and intrigue, before eventually melting down into a wall of pyrotechnic effects and suitably sinister finale. 

Beneath the ominous sounds of 'Animal Ritual' lies the energetic qualities of 'Hello My Name Is'. Van Orton mans the controls here, operating in solo capacity and ultimately crafting a track for those peak time dancefloor moments. Driving and hypnotic in equal measure, it's a foundation of rippling bass tones which sets the pace for deconstructed vocals and devilish effects to fully saturate your senses. Holographic synths flash through a whirlwind of clustered electronics and coral monochromes across the main break, eventually building to an arcane peak which not only rounds out Balkan Connection's 800th offering on a strong note, but adds yet another club tool to your arsenal.

'Making his debut for Hope Recordings this year is the irrepressible Kamilo Sanclemente with a four track EP, featuring the talents of partners, Dabeat and Muaro Aguirro.   

The Columbian artist has really hit his stride in recent times with a string of high profile signings to Mango Alley, UV and Balance Music. A DJ for over 20 years now with a residency in his home town of Cali, Kamilo’s rise has been meteoric and has gained him widespread support after being championed by Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren.   

Opening the EP is ‘Kessell’ with long term production partner, Dabeat. Twisted synths and a sparse kick/percussion arrangement lead us into wonky bass notes, twinkly arps and epic sweeps creating a masterful, otherworldly sonic journey. Next up is ‘Odin’, a robust subtly tribal groover. Gaining momentum quickly, the synth energy powers this the final bar. Thirdly, we have ‘Dream Walker’, a soulful vocal number which will excite and energise the floor. Finally, Kamilo teams up with Muaro Aguirro for ‘Cosmos’, an epic end of nighter with spoken word vocals and boundless soulful energy '

Our aim is to unite talents of the progressive house sound from the Balkan region and the world over, from established names to upcoming talents, on the way to conquer the world stage of electronic music.
