BALLROOM MARFA DJ CAMP 2022 with the Chulita Vinyl Club ATX: Austin’s DJ Mira Mira, Ale-Ale-Jandra and Pos Guau of the Chulita Vinyl Club had a blast teaching the kids how to drop a needle and make a smooth transition. For this final mix, these new little DJs picked their own vinyl and came up with a progression of tracks to put together. This is the final mix of Ballroom Marfa’s DJ Camp 2022.

About BALLROOM MARFA DJ CAMP 2022: From JUNE 20 - JUNE 24, Ballroom Marfa and Marfa ISD hosted a vinyl-only workshop led by the DJs of Chulita Vinyl Club ATX for Marfa students in grades five through eight.

The workshop was designed to engage the imagination of youth from all musical backgrounds. Throughout the week, students learned and practiced beat-matching, mixing, scratching, and more. While offering practical experience with turntables and vinyl records, The Chulita Vinyl Club ATX also presents DJing as an art form with a rich culture and history, with portions of each class covering the history of DJ culture, music collectives, basic music theory, and an introduction to zine-making. Students are encouraged to use found music and images to create their own narratives, celebrating personal history and cultural exploration.

Haroon Mirza joins Marfa Public Radio to talk about 'stone circle,' his newest work with Ballroom Marfa.

“The work features black marble boulders that produce patterns of electronic sound and light from energy generated by solar panels. Each of the eight stones in the circle is carved to integrate LEDs and speakers. The ninth stone, the “mother” stone, sits outside the circle. The mother stone’s solar panels charge a bank of batteries that will power a sound and light score that we will activate with each full moon.”

Diana Nguyen talks to musician Roberto Carlos Lange of Helado Negro for Marfa Public Radio's West Texas Talks.

They spoke when Lange and his partner, multidisciplinary artist Kristi Sword, were in town conducting preliminary research for a collaborative project with Ballroom Marfa.

Carolina Caycedo and David de Rozas talk about their upcoming exhibition with Ballroom, The Blessings of the Mystery. The artists are creating a new film and series of installations rooted in West Texas. The project crystallizes the artists’ extended research into the connections and tensions between the cultural, scientific, industrial, and socio-political forces of three key locations: the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, the Amistad Dam on the Rio Grande, and the Permian Basin oil fields.

~ About 'stone circle' ~
Mirza’s stone circle refers to prehistoric monuments such as Stonehenge and Nine Ladies, standing stones erected by humans and used for mysterious practices of communion with the Earth. Each of the eight stones in the circle is carved to integrate LED lights and embedded speakers. The ninth stone, the “mother” stone, sits apart, mounted with solar panels that charge a bank of batteries to power a sound and light score that is activated with each full moon. Visit on a full moon to hear for yourself the complex patterns of electronic sound and light translated from energy generated by the sun.

Artists Elmgreen and Dragset talk about how Prada Marfa has evolved and taken on a life of its own over its 15 years in West Texas.

Prada Marfa is a site-specific, permanent land art project by artists Elmgreen & Dragset, commissioned by Art Production Fund and Ballroom Marfa. 

Modeled after a Prada boutique, the sculpture houses luxury goods from the famed brand’s fall 2005 collection of bags and shoes. Located on a barren stretch of highway one mile west of Valentine TX, the artwork will never function as a place of commerce, since the door is always locked.

Roberto Carlos Lange (aka Helado Negro) talks with Diana Nguyen about the evolution of 'Kite Symphony,' life in Marfa during the Pandemic, and how the project has come to evolve.

Kite Symphony is a multimedia collaboration between musician Roberto Carlos Lange, also known as Helado Negro, and visual artist Kristi Sword. The artists are creating a new, non-linear, and impressionistic style film and live score, as well as a new body of sculptural work that explore the landscape of West Texas through wind, sound, and light. By capturing and documenting sounds the wind generates through interacting with kites, hand-made instruments from native materials, and various sound objects, the artists will bring shape to the ephemeral forces that define the West Texas landscape.

“Sounds for Thalweg Flag” is a sound piece made for "Thalweg Flag" by Lisa Alvarado in Ballroom Marfa's current exhibition, 'unFlagging.'

This piece was created by Natural Information Society, an ensemble founded by Joshua Abrams that features Alvarado on harmonium. The sound work, which includes newly composed, improvised and found sound, builds from components of “Thalweg Sounds,” a composition developed for Alvarado’s solo exhibition Thalweg at the Bridget Donahue Gallery in Summer 2020. With “Sounds for Thalweg Flag” Alvarado considers a liminal space, a fluid pathway of shifting water and sediment where layers of memory continuously mix and reconfigure.
