Thee J Johanz is playing live techno acid raga’s with Charanjit Singh all over the world. He has a great Bollywood collection, was DJ-ing for Bombay Connection and mastered their records. His main focus at the moment is deep house and deep techno, but he also loves to take people on a global journey. Latin, African, European, American and Indian music, no borders. Always uplifting and partyrocking.  This time his focus is on mainly rare Indian electro disco funk soul beats. Like he played in January this year in Delhi and in December in Bombay.

Thee J Johanz - India's Invisible Man Mix (Rare Indian Electro Disco Funk Soul mix)

Honey Soundsystem is proud to present an unreleased disco 12” by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, "The San Francisco Sound." During the 70s, Patrick was the lighting technician at The City disco in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. This was SF’s largest Gay entertainment complex, where everyone from Grace Jones to Sylvester would perform. Frank Loverde was performing there with his band Loverde when Patrick asked if the band would like to do backups on some songs he’d been working on. Frank, Linda Imperial and Timmy went to Patrick’s studio and laid down vocals for songs, most of which were never released and remained buried in the Megatone vaults.

In 2007 Honey Soundsystem was contacted by the former owner of Megatone Records John Hedges. Hedges’ was moving to Palm Springs and invited us over to his basement to collect over 2,000 records from his collection. Among the archives we noticed three moldy boxes of quarter inch reel to reel tapes. Included was the final mixed down reel for “Kickin’ In”, an epic 12-minute journey through disco, that Patrick recorded with Loverde in 1978. From the two minute plus drum solo that builds up to the introduction of a bouncing arpeggiated Prophet IV and the harmonized vocals, all transport the listener to another realm. The song encapsulates the Hi-NRG dance music that Patrick became known for. It was an “up” sound for the gay disco scene, music that would compliment and sometimes enhance all night dancing. On the flip are two earlier songs produced between 1975-77 featuring basslines by college classmate and studio mate Maurice Tani. Both songs feature Patrick narrating erotic gay sex fantasies inspired by San Francisco’s leather bars, back rooms and bathhouses. These songs show the sleazy side of Cowley’s slow burning, oozing electronic creations with layers and layers of synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and vocoder. 

All songs have been mastered by George Horn, who originally mastered all of the Megatone Records releases at Fantasy Studios. Each 12” comes housed in our custom Honey Soundsystem die-cut jacket featuring an illustration of the San Francisco skyline. Also included is a 8 inch square postcard of the original “Kickin’ In” reel to reel box with Patrick’s handwriting on the front and lyrics on the back. “Patrick parted the veil and entered a dark world of forbidden vices, wondrous musical panoramas and bold, strident, hopeful possibilities. On October 18th, 2009, Honey Soundsystem and Mama Calizo's Voice Factory will host Megatron Man: The Life and Times of Patrick Cowley an early evening event celebrating the life of a musician who we have bonded over and has influenced us on various levels including our sound, aesthetics and cultural upbringing in San Francisco. Often credited as the American Giorgio Moroder, Patrick's legend has become a symbol for a time when free love and technology would come together to forever change the social landscape. On this evening we come together to celebrate the journey and genius of Patrick to appease all the disco spirits of so many like him who fell victim to the AIDS crisis during the early 80's. 

A little background: In the late 70's into the early 80's, inside a music studio tucked away in the back lots of downtown, a handsome young man slaved away in a room full of synthesizers perfecting sounds that would transcend history and continue to resonate today. Outside of this studio was a city experiencing a cultural renaissance fueled by electric nights on the dancefloor in the midst of a burgeoning queer rights movement. 

Patrick Cowley, a 30 year old savant who started his career as a lighting technician at a popular dance club to producing highly acclaimed hi-nrg disco tracks and Billboard Chart toppers, is the individual we are celebrating on this special night. On the eve of what would be his 59th birthday we will be honoring our sonic mentor with a celebration and memorial to the life, music and legend of Patrick Cowley. Additionally, this will mark as a precursor to the release of Catholic, the very same week, a previously unheard collaboration between Patrick and Jorge Socarras of Indoor Life.

I'm moving through styles and favourites quite fast to keep the crowd of all ages and of musical background going, which worked really well, as you can hear! Flight 770 is an EP about global moods and inspirations, made around a trip to Georgia, where Thee J Johanz played at a festival with his friends from Goa. The title track combines old school gfunk grooves with techno sounds and dreamy leads from the rare Korg 770, while the boutique Russian Mad 5 drumsynth is spanking your ass with vibrant claps. Night of the bodySNADchers started as a project for the Goan Gandu label by Snad and Iggy the Bastard. It’s inspired by the trippy vibe of the endless (after)parties at Cirrus, near Chapora. Thunder Over Tbilisi expresses the pressure you feel in Georgia, specially after what recently happened to club life in Tbilisi. Coming back to Holland Thee J Johanz played at the Island of Terschelling and refound himself looking at the stars. Small dots in a seemingly infinite universe. But also massive electrifying diamonds.

DJ, radio host and music critic Abhi Meer’s mix for Wild City might be our most dramatic one yet. Peppered generously with riveting moments, the mix is an auditory equivalent of a consolidated epic thriller. 

Abhi Meer has a reputation for approaching his sets with a research-like approach. Consequently, the boxout.fm regular has had the privilege of playing at club gigs, festivals and residencies around the world, including the first Boiler Room party in New Delhi.

While some mixes aim for the dancefloor experience and others for passive listening, our latest mix demands – or rather, steals – your attention with its stirring moments. The first of such moments is employed to grip you from the get-go, as the bright mood of The Smith Connection’s R&B hit ‘Under My Wings’ slows down, in the gimmicky (and we consider it a positive thing) fashion of an interrupted vinyl playback, to make way for LORN’s colder electronic sounds in ‘Kold Mirage’. 

Throwing in outlandish selections with Caterina Barbieri’s ‘Pinnacles Of You’ and the jarring piano strikes in ‘Arrows Of Time’, Abhi Meer engages the listener with off-kilter tracks that punctuate seamless blends of genres, traversing through bass, IDM, dubstep and beyond. Meanwhile, the rhythmic onslaught of Rainer Veil’s ‘Element’ catching us off guard as we give in to the calming harmonies of Lifted’s ‘Near Future’, goes down as our favourite moment; it’s the perfect example of the undulating respite and thrill in Abhi Meer’s narrative. If such a selection was to be mixed live, we imagine the best way to take it all in wouldn’t be through the dancefloor but by having the listeners seated down – as if watching a theatrical performance unfold, or a work of meticulous musical storytelling.
