In this episode, musician and artist Natalie Sharp considers the importance of clean air and its interconnectedness with climate justice. We hear from Chisara Agor – a multi-disciplinary musician and sound artist from London whose work raises awareness of UK air pollution and the intersections of class, race and politics – who talks to climate justice activists Nyeisha Mallett and Elizabeth Yeampierre of UPROSE in New York, an organisation that puts Black and Indigenous voices at the heart of the climate emergency. We also hear work by poet Daisy Lafarge, whose collection Life without Air ponders the fragility of air and its effect on both our psyche and the climate.

Panel discussion relating to the Susan Hiller: Recall: Selected Works 1969-2004 exhibition at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (1 May - 18 July 2004), with Rosemary Betterton, Guy Brett, Ian Hunt, Denise Robinson and Stella Santacatterina.

This exhibition constituted the most wide-ranging survey of Hiller’s work in a career which at this point spanned some 30 years. The exhibition included a number of Hiller’s major installations, including colour projection work Magic Lantern (1987), through to more recent installations investigating paranormal powers – Wild Talents (1998) and Witness (2000) – alongside a major new audio installation, Clinic (2004)

George Maciunas: The Dream of Fluxus: A tour of the exhibition with Thomas Kellein

Joanne Coates is an artist and photographer interested in hidden histories, ruralism and class, motivated by her background growing up in a working-class rural area in the North of England.  Her practice is embedded in the working-class communities she photographs, working closely and collaboratively with her subjects to investigate the intersection between class and rural life through the lens.

Ker Wallwork is the recipient of the first Baltic x Shape Emergent Residency. Emergent is a new hybrid residency and support programme for early-career artists, delivered in partnership with Shape Arts, a disability-led organisation based in London. Wallwork has a multi-disciplinary practice spanning moving image, drawing, text, and sculpture. Their work is about language, queerness, sickness and the welfare state, and is broadly concerned with miscommunication.

During their residency, Wallwork is staging an intervention on Baltic’s Level 5 viewing platform and in other areas of the building. Titled Merg (2020–ongoing) the intervention will take place over several days. The work takes the form of a benefits letter, handed out to visitors by Baltic Crew, enclosed in the infamous, now discontinued, brown envelopes used by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). Addressed to Joseph Rank, the original owner of Baltic Flour Mills, and to some of the first people to work at the mill when it opened, the letter incorporates direct quotes and language from the DWP’s guidance for benefit assessors.

Merg is part of a series of works chronicling the logic and language of austerity that has been used to justify increasing privatisation of the Health and Care sectors, and welfare reforms, which have had a devastating impact on the lives of many sick and disabled people. The letters will include a postcard with a still image from Wallwork’s moving image work Whatever, Pedant (2020).

Phyllida Barlow in conversation with Miles Thurlow (Part 2)

Rachel Campbell Hewson is an artist and writer. Her practice, which encompasses collage and animation, focuses on the manipulation and blending of images from art history, whilst reflecting on femininity, history, love, life and death.  

Campbell Hewson’s installation, and Hadrian’s grief (2023), is inspired by the story of the Emperor Hadrian and his beloved Antinous. In 130 AD Antinous fell into the Nile and drowned. Hadrian’s grief was so immense, he idolised his love and made him into a God. He became ‘Antinous the good’, ‘Antinous the hero’ and ‘the new Dionysus’. The cult of Antinous became infamous and survived through the centuries. 

The glass sarcophagus installed in the centre of Baltic’s Level 5 Viewing Platform, is a monument to Hadrian and Antinous and the immortality of love. With a score written and performed by Daisy Bell, a collaborating musician and artist, the work invites us to consider grief and desire: what is it to live well and die poorly, to live in shame and die at peace. 

 

Campbell Hewson was commissioned to make a new work for display at Baltic as part of her Foundation Club Residency. Foundation Club has been designed to support young people from the North East aged 16–24 to access, engage with, learn from and be mentored by creative and cultural professionals to progress their artistic talent and realise their creative potential. The other selected artists in 2022 are Annabelle Blackett and Cameron Lings. Their commissions can be found on Baltic’s Ground Floor and Level 4 Viewing Terrace at Baltic between 24 March – 17 July 2023.

This new lightbox commission has been created by gobscure, an artist, writer and performer based in Newcastle.

"the afon wysg (river usk) which flows through south wales, has saved our life many times – literally and metaphorically. some rivers have rights, this one has riots (it was the site britain’s last insurrection – the chartist uprising in cas newydd, newport in november 1839); the ‘other’ british transporter bridge (in newport); where we wrote our first ever poem; our first punk gig (as audience member); a yew tree at defynnog that defies science (the oldest heartwood has rotted so it cannot be accurately carbon-dated); the population of red kite (carrion birds) almost wiped out in the 1970’s still clinging on here, now successfully rewilding all over, including in the north-east’s derwent valley; the northern-most locations for wild (not domestic) welsh poppies are here – these flowers have taught us that post-trauma-growth is possible; the mountains, at rivers’ source, are where our horizons were first literally widened." 

This is a colourful mapping ahead of a wider touring celebration in sound, poetry banners, sculpture, and photography opening at Llantarnam Grange, Cwmbran, February 2024. 

gobscure is also an artist in residence at Live Theatre, their solo performance premieres at Live Theatre in May 2024.

:zoviet*france: A Duck in a Tree | An Error in the Azimuth


An exhibition of work by artists Henna Asikainen and Roua Horanieh will be presented at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead during Refugee Week 2025. The project has been developed with the participation of a group of people with experience of migration and displacement, who now live in Gateshead and Newcastle.

To Own Both Nothing and the Whole World has been co-commissioned and co-produced by Counterpoints Arts and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and made possible by the support of Moomin Characters Ltd. It is part of celebrations marking 80 years since the publication of the first Moomin story by Tove Jansson, which had a focus on displacement. The title of the exhibition is a quote from Snufkin, one of the characters in the Moomin stories.

The project explores ideas of home and belonging, reflecting on the impact of displacement on both human and more-than-human worlds. Recognising that nature is our first habitat without which no home can be built. The materials used in the work are foraged from the surrounding landscape, each carrying its own enchanting story—bringing communities together in unexpected and meaningful ways.

The multiple artworks will be seen outside of the gallery, in the entrance area Lightbox, on Ground Floor and in the Level 5 Viewing Box, with its presence woven across Baltic. 

At the heart of the work are Taihaku cherry trees and their extraordinary migration story, where a sole migrant tree in the UK became a saviour of the whole ecosystem, reviving the extinct community in its native country of Japan. 

The exhibition also encompasses migratory birdnests with their many stories of movement, resilience and adaptation and 200-year-old tree roots planted during the Napoleonic Wars, and which were uprooted by a recent storm. Willow and other foraged wonders from community gardens feature within the artwork alongside a tree felled by a storm in local suburbia, a reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the cycles of loss and renewal.

Through this assemblage of living histories, To Own Both Nothing and The Whole World invites reflection on the interconnected journeys of people, plants, and place—foregrounding the invaluable contribution migrants bring to this country, and the power and beauty of nature and community in shaping our shared world.

The project aims to raise awareness around displacement and climate, to create the opportunity for dialogue with asylum seekers, refugees and migrants around the perception of their migration, their future and how they can thrive in a new environment. It also enables the opportunity for dialogue within the local area on what it takes to welcome a migrant community. Many different elements make a nest, and it takes many to create it, weaving together different elements to create something solid that can hold and shelter someone. By creating a story that lives on in people’s memories and thoughts, there is the potential to change minds and behaviours.

Artist Hajra Waheed and Prof. Steve Graham, Professor of Cities and Society, University of Newcastle will discuss surveillance and drone technology.

Prof. Graham draws on critical social and urban theory in his research to address some of the key challenges facing our rapidly urbanizing world, relating to urban aspects of social and digital surveillance, the politics of urban security and the ‘new military urbanism’. His new publication Vertical: Looking at the City From Above and Below (Verso, 2016) will address the ways in which questions of security, war and political violence now permeate deeply into the everyday spaces, sites and circulations of urban life on a planet where 75% of the population is expected to live in urban areas by 2050.

Prof. Graham's research has played important roles in the rapid recent growth of critical social scientific work on urban surveillance and the proliferation of work across many disciplines on the implications of the digital media revolution for urban life.

Volcanoes and Utopias: an audio performance by artists Kate Liston and Tess Denman-Cleaver 

Kate Liston and Tess Denman-Cleaver's podcast is a poetic performance on volcanoes, parliamentary architecture, Norse mythology, Quaker design, pease pudding, the current lack of gossip, and the function of utopias. 

Volcanoes and Utopias is a collection of work-in-progress extracts from Town Hall Meeting of the Air, which will be presented at Baltic 39 in January 2021. Town Hall Meeting of the Air considers the poetics of civic gathering and invites reimaginings of public political discourse. The work is framed here within a fictionalised account of the artists' attempt to design and plan for future public gatherings whilst in lockdown.

Kate Liston works with moving image, installation, and writing that is sometimes performed. Notable projects include Oh-Link Zone, Black Tower Projects, London (2018); Feel After the New See, The Hatton Gallery, Newcastle (2018); The Scientific Method, The Tetley Gallery, Leeds (2016); Feminism and the Body in Performance, MART Gallery, Dublin (2015); They Used to Call it the Moon, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead (2014). She is a lecturer in Fine Art at Northumbria University. 
 
Tess Denman-Cleaver’s work spans performance, writing, installation and workshops. Can caring collectively address existing unequal systems and services? 
 
This episode contains references to slavery and discussion of mental health issues.

We consider health inequalities with artist, writer, filmmaker, performer and activist Dolly Sen and Stephani Hatch, Professor of sociology and epidemiology at the Institute of Science, Kings College, London, who is currently leading a Wellcome-funded study, TIDES (Tackling Inequalities and Discrimination Experiences in health services). They discuss centering the voices of people who have been unheard by the UK mental health system through research and through bringing beauty to what Dolly calls an ugly system. 

With Black Power Naps, created by artists Navild Acosta and Fannie Sosa, we explore how they tackle unequal access to rest in Western society, where relaxation is a luxury for the privileged and considers some of the ways that the structures of Western societies deny certain people access to something as fundamental as rest. Highlighting the long history of sleep deprivation for black and racialised people and the attempts to justify this inequality with pseudoscience, as part of the ongoing project, the artists have created a Dream Bag as a guidance for better sleep. The toolkit has been specially conceived for people who experience racism regularly in our society, to support breaking with constant fatigue by slowing down and resting. Physical packs to aid relaxation and sleep will be distributed to people based locally to BALTIC, in Gateshead, of South Asian heritage, East Asian, South East Asian heritage, and people of African or Caribbean heritage alongside a digital toolkit, launching online that can be found at www.baltic.art/dreambag.

Settle in for some alone time in the midst of  the cacophony of communal sound with London-based international artist Rowdy SS, working with sound, movement, dance, music, installation, and live happening. In this work, Rowdy SS brings our attention to the sounds of communal spaces, which for many of us have taken on new meaning this past year.
