Don't Get Closer

Paul Snoek is a communist poet who was allowed to enjoy an early death, an honor that befell more communist artists and writers in our Free West. I write about him in both 'Poems to Read in the Dark' as well as 'The Eternal Hazing', in which I investigate his death and his strange literary reception.

I have his collected works and Paul Snoek probably never expected that he would end up in a punk song one day, at least the translation I made of the poem.

Pumpernickel

The mountains smell of sour bread.
At ground level, the mountains smell of bread
I breathe like a wooden woodsman
and blow blue flour out of my eyes.

I knead a certain dough in my belly
and climb over screaming gravel rivers
clogged by the damaged marrow fishes
I even hear an ant contest here.

I feel no love in the body earth.
I feel many kettles boiling boulders,
they squeeze my hands into clay of regret,
a gnawing hunger, hours deep within me.
