BHILL001 - Majid Bekkas - Cervo Edits

Kawuku Sound is the coming together of UK producers Contours & Cervo and Ugandan percussion troupe Fonkodelis Arkestra. This is the culmination of a month-long creative process that was born out of the Nyege Nyege affiliated Boutiq Studio in Kawuku, Kampala, Uganda.

The music was written and recorded in this shared residency space, home to musicians and visual artists from all over East Africa and beyond and a hub for Kampala’s underground electronic music scene. Boutiq Studio’s DIY mentality provided the perfect environment for experimentation, allowing the fusion of these disparate sounds.

Kawuku Sound is a reflection of this, merging the hypnotic and trance-inducing percussion of Buganda drumming with elements of contemporary electronics and traditional instrumentation. The album artwork is a special commission from Nuwa Wamala Nnyanzi, who runs the Nnyanzi Art Studio in Kampala. This the first album release to come out on Manchester imprint Banana Hill as they continue to push the boundaries of afro-electronic sounds.

Back in 2012, Dirty Paraffin gave us a glimpse of the future sound of South Africa with this mixtape; a wealth of unknown bangers out of Durban, DP's own unique brand of hip hop and a few classic kwaito throwbacks for good measure. Overdubbed with his infectious freestyle rapping, Okmalumkoolkat takes us on a journey with this one.

The world of We Invisible opens wider — Jinje and A Brief Utopia’s album reawakened through transformative reworks by Dreems, Chez De Milo, H20, Jinje, Cervo, and Simas Slabačiauskas. Six unique visions, six portals into new soundscapes, each revealing another side of the invisible.

A Brief Utopia (A project by Jinjé) A Brief Utopia was born from an EP released by Jinjé (aka, Lee J Malcolm from Vessels) on Scene Unseen. Stepping away from his usual production duties and focusing more on his passion for live drumming and percussion instruments. This was the starting block for much of the composition on the this record. He quickly realised that this would be a brilliant thing to do live and reached out to fellow musicians Danny Templeman (Submotion Orchestra, Gentleman’s DubClub) and Nathan Moseley (Fwar, Brolin) to put together a high energy show aimed at clubs and festivals alike.A Brief Utopia brings a colourful, vibrant and visually engaging experience. Drawing on a love of music from around the world focused through a lens of live drumming, tuned percussion and psychedelic synth work.

What is Banana Hill? 

Banana Hill began in Sheffield, filling the city's warehouses with sounds of the global underground. It expanded to Manchester in 2014 to clubs such as Soup Kitchen & Hidden and more recently to London, showcasing music & artists from around the world.
There are amazing sounds everywhere, and we try to bring them together -  afrobeat, jazz, kwaito, disco, house, neo-soul, techno, kuduro, hip hop, footwork, balani show, cumbia and lots more.

Genre-hopping club night Banana Hill present their first release, as they begin to share the music that forms one of the UK's most unique parties. Though taking influence from around the globe, their journey as a label begins in Morocco, with multi-instrumentalist Majid Bakkas reworked for the dancefloor by co-founder Cervo. With both tracks taken from the incredible 2001 album African Gnaoua Blues (Igloo Records), the A-side features 8-minute groove workout 'Soudani Manayou', a perfect fusion of Gnawa guitar and afro-jazz sensibilities. On the flip, a club-ready version of 'Mrhaba' leaves the original spirit intact but brings a definitive peak-time bounce, complete with a whirling flute breakdown. Full sleeve artwork comes from Colombia-based artist Bethany Porteous.

PREMIERE: Kawuku Sound - Lost In Sound

There was much to see and much to do beneath the covered streets, the tarpaulin which hung from atop the towering buildings cast a shadow down upon the densely packed close. This was Owino market and the price was right for whatever and whichever wonder you chose to buy upon that fine day. The air was close and the tiny alleyways packed with the hustle and bustle of people moving between market stalls - the heat was stale under the tightly packed coveralls and inside was all the trinkets and treats you might ever desire. 

Kawuku Sound is the collaborative project of two electronic producers Contours and Cervo who have worked alongside Ugandan percussion troupe Fonkodelis Arkestra. They have release a six track EP with a blend of influences.

The first of a new series of edits supporting charities around the world, to run alongside our party series in Manchester which will be raising money in tandem. 

This month, all proceeds from sales will be going to non-profit fundraiser festival Meet Me There in the Volta region of Ghana. They directly support an organisation called Dream Big Ghana, a project which works intimately with village communities on sanitation, healthcare, education and youth sports and musical development projects.

Thanks to everyone who supported the Idrissa Soumaoro edit last month, we managed to raise £118 (so far) for non-profit festival Meet Me There in Ghana, along with £500 from our club night at the end of January. 

This month, all proceeds from sales of James Fox's excellent edit of this SA boogie jam from 1985 by Simon Moloi will be going to the Manchester Central Foodbank, who provide a vital service people for those in need. 
Our night on 22nd February at Soup Kitchen will also be raising funds for them.

Our series of edits supporting charities around the world continues into the new year, to run alongside our party series in Manchester which will be raising money in tandem. Each month (or so), we will be releasing an edit via Bandcamp and donating the proceeds to a selected charity. 

Thanks to everyone who supported the series in 2019, we raised over £525 from Bandcamp music sales and £840 from our regular club series for Meet Me There, Manchester Central Foodbank, The International Rescue Committee, Bath Centre for Adolescent Pain Services, One Happy Family Community Centre and RNLI. 

To start 2020, Glasgow-based producer VARDI delivers a bouncing rework of legendary Brazilian musician Oscar Neves. 
Proceeds will be going to the Ubuntu Women's Shelter, a Glasgow charity who meet emergency accommodation needs of women with no recourse to public funds.
