C Powers presents to you today on July 4th of 2023 an audio companion to your anti-celebratory experiences. May this mix be with you for those moments when you really do not feel like celebrating the legacy of racism, slavery, and white supremacy that is Amerikkka.

C Powers' sound is informed by years spent collecting records in Atlanta and Chicago, honing crowd control skills in the foggy clubs of London, helping foster queer spaces for dancing in Savannah GA, and solidarity dance nights in Portland OR.

Cecilia's sets and releases combine elements of gay camp, anti-sophistication, extended turntable technique, and a sense of juxtaposition molded by a DJ career that has strayed from the traditional "club" spaces. Imagine a girl that grew up buying her first DnB & FL Breaks vinyls in late 90's Atlanta GA then going on to join one of the most chaotic drag families of the east coast while also paying bills as a wedding dj in the coastal region of Georgia. If you can conjure this crowd-pleasing combination then you have a clue: not much point in going into a C Powers set with expectations.

Cecilia has been heavily active in anti-displacement organizing. When she moved to LA in 2019, she joined the Los Angeles Tenants Union, helping working class and undocumented families organize against unethical landlords and gentrification in North Hollywood. Upon moving to Portland a year later, she became a co-founding member of Don’t Evict Portland, a tenant-lead organization that is working to build tenant power and delay, reduce, or eliminate the harm and violence of evictions. Cecilia's work in organizing blends into her work as an electronic musician and DJ. The experiences she's had behind the decks and in organizing spaces have begun to meld lately in the series of events called Trainwreck. These events are solidarity-fundraising shows that aim to put as close to 100% of proceeds directly into the hands of tenants working with Dont Evict Portland to combat displacement and the expenses thereof. Cecilia has also explored bringing music into the organizing space and weaponizing audio for disruption. In turn, this work is informing her audio production, bringing the theme and energy of collective action into her music production and collaborations.

Our last mix of the year is truly a special one indeed! MEMCO alums Fabiola & Lorelei teamed up for a magical one-tow punch after DJing together for over 5 years now. 

Highlighted by a unique & cohesive selection, they managed to successfully round out this rather frantic year on a special note, captured through their mutual love for Electro, Bass & anything Detroit. 

Instead of verbally communicating, they were feeding off of each other’s energy during an intense & intimate recording session. Get ready to enter a space where the bass takes on an extra-terrestrial form of its own. 

When asked for the idea & theme behind this mix, Fabi & Laura deem the emphasis on robotic & alien-like sounds as freeing. The trippy, repetitive, & funky machine-like
soundscapes are, in contrast to us beings, not programmed to uphold any particular system. Rather, the patterns they follow serve the purpose of breaking down any barriers & inhibitions we might have. We‘ve have done our part already by dancing, feeling it to the core & simply “getting lost in the beat” - will you do the same? 

Starting out as part of the coolest collective in Michigan, they are now both based in Chicago & continue to explore & carve out their very own sound. Tapes X 009 - happy to have you <3
