Fire in the Sky

A malformed protest song and memorial for all those old school socialists and anarchists and fire raisers that have been pushed aside by the change of history and its political axis - circular folk rock verses remind us of the legacy of these prophets of arcadian utopias and the need for the spirit of the people to endure - these choruses give way to guitar duel solos as the past fights the future of the left the second of these  3 solos has a guest scrabbabang geetar screech from producer Simon Trought - his first since the days of his old group Tompaulin. The last solo has Ben's wonderfully paisley Beatles-esque backwards solo ending the EP as it began and lyrically with a note of hope that the next generation of dreamers fight apathy. When the band began over 20 years ago this Tony Benn form of labour and socialism still breathed and was still valid and we tried to write songs and manifesto that echoed these thoughts but gradually it's become archaic so this song forms a farewell to that and to one element of the groups motifs although the political side will become even more pronounced with the next record it seems pointless to continue with the outdated socialist motifs of then.

Cruising are a four piece from Dublin and Belfast made up of Benni Johnston (Vocals), Claire Miskimmin (Guitar/Bass) Neil Brogan (Guitar/Bass) and Sarah Grimes (drums). With previous/ongoing experience in bands such Girls Names, September Girls, Sea Pinks and Logikparty, Cruising began in 2013 as a side project for all four.

Named for William Friedkin’s gay exploitation shocker from 1980, the debut single You Made Me Do That (taken from the killer’s line in the film) dropped in early 2014 on Soft Power records and was recorded live as it was written. Practicing sporadically and playing a string of incendiary/chaotic live shows when schedules allow, CRUISING have now miraculously recorded their debut EP proper for Tough Love. Recorded in two days in a freezing railway arch studio (Dublin’s Guerilla Studios) in January 2015, and mixed at Belfast’s Start Together, the self titled EP shows the band in various guises, morphing between popper’d up Agit-Punk (the re-recorded You Made Me Do That, Woman), psyched out post-punk (Lifting), and riff driven bangers (Safe Corridor, Cutlass, The Spectacle).

Every source of pain, every sting of pride had to come from the outside.  But you.  You won't even fight me fair.  Wait for the darkness catch me unaware. You pull me close.  Then you twist the knife.  I don't wanna live with the kinds of trouble I keep finding myself in.  Mirror to my left, mirror to my right.  A void stretching out on either side.
